AKA: A Day In The Life Of…
I’ve now been living in this country for 2 years (and 1 day) now, and like last year, I thought I’d document this momentus day… This time on my cameraphone.
It’s funny how one thing can lead to something completely different…
Tonight Robyn and I were watching Robots as it came in my Netflix queue, and as we were watching the special features up came a quick interview with Ewan McGregor much to Robyn’s delight, as it was, in her words, the first time she heard him in his Scottish accent… She diggs the accent I guess, I dunno. But I tell her she has had a copy of the Trainspotting DVD for at least 18 months… Put it on then, she says.
But as it was a copy on a DVD-R, it decided not to work, so then came an idea… A golden idea.
Find a way of ripping a DVD for TiVo to use…
Ahh TiVo, god bless TiVo… Is there nothing it can’t do?
So a quick search came up with this tutorial which basically says rip a DVD onto the hard drive, cut and paste the .vob file into the My TiVo Recordings Folder and rename it to *whatever*.mpg…
So using the tried and trusted guinea pig Serenity DVD I gave it a shot, and an hour later it was being transferred to TiVo by way of the TiVo desktop, sweet… So this got me thinking, if we really wanted to, we could buy a big enough hard drive, rip Netflix movies to it as and when they arrive and *boom* we got ourselves a little home made video-on-demand service.
I figure Serenity is an average length movie (1 hour 59 minutes) so it came out with a 4.3GB mpeg file, that would be like having around 100 movies, ready to go… All we’d need to do is start the transfer and wait 10 to 15 minutes so it can playback without pausing, can’t argue with that.
Tonight was the 1 year anniversary of the monthly APWBWGTTD meetings which took place at Trader Vics underneath the Hilton in downtown Atlanta, and although I’ve only been to a few of them, it’s always fun to get out and shoot the proverbial shit with people I read on a daily basis (sometimes more).
It was a pretty good turnout, at least for the short time I was there, as most of the “usual suspects” turned up, including the return of the prodigal son from his self-imposed exile… It was also cool finally getting to put faces to names of some new people, I’m sure the inevitable sign-in sheet will surface sooner or later.
Anyways, it was weird when people knew me before I even introduced myself, seems I’m infamous (which everybody knows means “more than famous”). Sure us ATLBloggers are a pretty incestious bunch, but I wonder who’s the most “famous” out of our little online clique community… If I had to vote, I’d prolly go for Mary (aka WeirdBabe) as she managed to score a book deal out of Threadbared, a dream we surely all asipre to?

I’m sure you’ve seen them by now… You know what I’m talking about…
But sometimes you need to see it a couple of times more… And I do believe Simon is having an embolism right about now.
Yes, I will get my ass kicked for this.
As temperatures plumeted here in Atlanta, 35 or so of the Atlanta Flickr Group thought it would be a good idea to go on the first photostroll of the new year. I hadn’t made to any of the official photostrolls last year so, like quite a few others, this would be my first, and it was pretty eventful.
Firstly it involved me waking up at 8:15 to sneak out of bed, shower, get dressed, have breakfast, check the camera had batteries and memory stick, get replacement batteries, pack backpack, remember to wear knee brace, get iPod, get phone and leave… Not an easy task for me, so I left at 9:15, about 15 minutes later than I really wanted and MARTA would make me pay… The walk to the nearest MARTA station usually takes about 10 minutes, mostly due to the complete lack of cross signals on the road leading there, so I usually end up playing a game of Frogger with the traffic… Once in the station, the wait can take as long as 20 minutes, the price for living on the far edge of the northern line? Once on the train it should have taken about 25 minutes to get to the meeting point at Midtown MARTA station, except some genius at MARTA thought it would be funny to dump a full train of people onto the platform at Lindbergh for no reason.
We were told another train would be 5 minutes away, by this point it’s 10am, that when the meeting time was… so 5 minutes pass and sure enough, another train comes and dumps another train load of people onthe the platform, by which time I’m groaning at the prospect of the next train, sure enough, 5 minutes after that a train comes and wouldn’t you know it… It’s full also… God knows how 3 trains worth of people fit into 1 train, but I get the feeling some strangers got a little too close for comfort, luckily I was only going 2 stops.
To cut a long story short, I was late, everyone had left to go their seperate ways, but luckily I wasn’t the only late one, so we became our own group and walked down Peachtree Street, which, due to the weather, had become nothing more than a glorified wind tunnel… We walked as far as the Fox Theater before meeting up with a bunch of people and headed back for lunch, but not before I nearly got freaking knocked down without so much as a “sorry,” or “are you ok?”
6th Street and Peachtree is a one way street, so I crossed when a car started moving onto Peachtree, I was looking down 6th for oncoming cars when I hear a collective “OHHHHH!” from the group as the car that had pulled away decided to reverse into me! No harm/damage caused as it was prolly going at like 5mph (if that) but still, I turn to look at the driver and it’s a woman on a cellphone oblivious about what just occured… And like that *poof!* she was gone. Keyser Soze style. If I had a big tripod, I would have jammed it through the back window on principle alone.
Anyways, 2 hours in the cold had turned all our extremities pretty much numb so a much needed hot meal was due at Stool Pigeons. Though, I can only imagine the shock they had when 35 people had came stumbling in from the cold asking for one big table… Which we didn’t get, but the service was alright.
Anyways, I met a whole bunch of new Flickr people outside of the 5 to 10 I already knew, the names of which I’ve already forgotten (my bad) but check out the diversity of pictures we got today via the 2006aps01 tag on Flickr.

Every once in a while I stumble across what can only be described as a killer link, and this is indeed one of them from the depths of humhum… Japanese beatbox artist Dokaka doing Nirvana’s “Smells Like Teen Spirit.”
How can you not love that?
Todays edition of Rocketboom is a recap of CES 2006, and it’s just a flurry of images over the classic “Dueling Banjos” from Deliverance and as I was being rapidly bombarded by these pictures, at 25 seconds in one caught my eye…
Yeah, it’s a TiVo (enough of the TiVo lovin’ already man!) but not just any TiVo, it looks almost exactly like my TiVo Picture…
Now I could be mistaken, but it does seem a little strange that they’d show a Series 2 TiVo at CES when they had a brand new, shiny Series 3 on show. And I find it odd they’d take one from the same angle and distance as I did of my own TiVo in my living room…
Anyways, I put up a little comparison on Flickr and the two do seem to match… So all I can think of is “holy smokes, I got Rocketboom’d!”

EDIT (10/01/06 4:20pm): I got a nice email from Amanda Congdon herself (I KNOW!!!) explaining they did use my image and they were sorry for not crediting and they have rectified it. What a nice person :)
It was a lazy Sunday, so we decided to finally go and see The Chronic (what?) Cles of Narnia… And overall, I have to say, it was pretty ok…
Now, I’m sure I’ve read this book at some point in my life (infact I think most British school children were forced to), as some of it seemed familiar, but that was a long time ago and it was mostly long forgotten, but I was pretty satisfied with the movie. Sure, it had it’s shakey moments, like horribly bad CGI background on some shots, but on the whole it was well done, especially the battle scenes involving a cornucopia of exotic animals and manbeasts… The childrens acting was ok, not too wooden, though there were a lot of moments I wanted to slap the actress who played Lucy, or the Lucy character as a whole. I mean, you’ve just stumbled into a weird land through a freakin’ wardrobe, a half man/half goat Faun has just startled you then invites you over for tea, why in god’s name would you even think of saying yes?
Stupidity, or childhood innocence/naiveté I guess.
Anyways, I spent most of the movie wondering if Cate Blanchett was playing The White Witch, as Tilda Swinton bore a striking resemblance to her and her portrayal of Galadriel in the Lord of the Rings trilogy. Other than that there weren’t too many distractions and as I said before, it was pretty ok, enjoyably ok…
Over the weekend we had success in finding a USB Wireless Adapter for our TiVo box, so now I can pimp it freely without having to worry that it would end up a glorified paperweight in a few days time…
We love it, seriously, we never really watched much TV outside of Lost, Desperate Housewives, Grey’s Anatomy and House, now we’re watching so much it’s criminal, Robyn has went crazy recording all the freaky shows on TLC and Discovery. As you can see on the left, it’s weird shows like “Face Eating Tumor” and “The 750-Pound Man” that she’s into…
After the whole painful drama that purchasing a network adapter caused, I was wondering if it was worth it, but since we got it hooked up it’s now updated to the latest software which allows it to stream music and view photos over the network (handy if you think about it, especially if we want to show off wedding photos) and we can transfer programs to the computers to watch there, or convert them for iPod viewing use. I also get Rocketboom downloaded for 3 or 4 minutes of silly news a day.
Now I know what your thinking, that you dont need anything like TiVo, but trust me, once you get it set up and you press the pause button or rewind for the first time, that’s it… You’re hooked. There’s no going back from then on. Then you go deeper and tell it what shows you like and set up season passes for first run only or repeats so you need never worry about missing anything ever again, I need no longer worry about going to APWBWGTTD meetings and missing Lost. Which is funny, as at the last one when I suggested they move the meetings to a non-Lost weeknight, I was told to get a TiVo.
Infact, as it’s hooked up to our network, we don’t even need to be home program it! TiVo Central allows us to login from any computer anywhere and select programs to record, and through Yahoo! TV I can tell it to record stuff via my phone, the wonders of technology…
Another bonus of it is since we got our new TV a little over a month ago, we lost the TV guide that was built into the old TV (we just have basic cable with no box) so now we don’t have to worry about channel hopping or going to the PC to lookup TV Guide, lazy I know, but you’d be surprised how clueless you’d be without an on screen TV guide nowadays…
It does have it’s downsides though, like no HDTV support (yet!) so if we want to watch HD we have to switch over to regular TV, multiple tuners like the DirecTiVo’s have would be cool, so if we were recording one channel, we could still watch another with the TiVo options instead of switching over to regular TV, and I’d really like it if the live TV buffer was longer than 30 minutes, say an hour… But other than that I have no complains at all, infact I’d go as far as saying I’m overjoyed with this.
Long live the TiVolution!
It’s been a bad night as I didn’t get much sleep, so this might sound more ranty than it really is…
Firstly, that WYSIWYG interface? Freakin’ awful… I’ve spent the last 2½ years in total control of my postings, I’m not ready for some fancy-schmancy bit of javascript take it away from me… The only blessing is it can be turned off.
The Inline File Upload sucks ass, I had my upload path going to my normal images folder, completly ignoring the wp-images one so now why would I want to change that? I didn’t even get the option, WordPress changed it for me, luckily I found a plugin that restores the old upload method, but it’s kinda sad it required a plugin to do that… Sure, it’ll protect some users from uploading large images that may ruin their layout, but surely that’s their perogative? Also, the option not to have the big stinking box on the post page would be nice.
While I’m on the image upload… Why would I want the image to be a post in it’s own right? This option should not be a default.
The Flickr BlogThis option has been screwy recently as the WordPress XMLRPC has changed… Apparently it doesn’t like the classes I specified in the layout on Flickr, which really sucks. Good thing I kept the moblog as WP 1.5.2 which has no problems accepting Flickr posts.
Michael Heilemann pointed out how useless the “Other WordPress News” feed is and I’m in full agreement, sadly the Dashboard Options plugin isn’t 2.0 compatable (at time of writing) as you were able to turn that waste of space off.
The phantom self induced pingbacks are back… Easily the worst option in WordPress. Pinging other sites is ok, but when I link to a post of my own I shouldn’t see a dirty pingback, this disappeared in 1.5.x (at least for me) but now it’s back with a vengeance as is the non working trackbacks.
Thats the current negative aspects of WordPress 2 for me, the rest of it is great, I do like the movable AJAX sections in the post page and the ability to expand/collapse them, I do like the fact Akismet and the DB Backup plugins came with it, I do like the new look to the admin interface, so much so I’ve not bothered to get the updated Tiger Admin plugin.
Overall it’s a big step forward for the WordPress team and they should be congratulated, but to a user like me who was extremely comfortable with the 1.2/1.5 way of doing things, it’s a slight step back in many places as they cater to novice or new WordPress users (I assume). Just proves you can’t please all the people all the time…
So here we are, 2006, closer to the year 2010 than we were to the turn of the Millennium, freaky…
We spent the night at Philips with the Atlanta Flickr peeps, with a surprise guest from Raleigh, generally having fun and blowing shit up, isn’t that what new year is all about?
Oh well… Hopefully this year brings about good fortune and health and all that kind of stuff, and I hope you had a good time with 2005, time to trade it in for 2006, but be careful, it’s the only 2006 you’ll get…

It’s that time again, the time where everyman and his dog or cat or whatever breaks out a list of stuff that made 2005 memorable, and I’m no exception, after going overboard with dumbass categories last year I’m keeping it simple… Top 5 albums with 5 honourable mentions, and likewise with movies…
So without further adieu
1. Sufjan Stevens – Illinoise
Sure, it’s everyones darling right now, hyped by the independents, top of numerous lists but it’s a work of art dammit! I only got into this a few weeks ago having heard nothing of Stevens’ previous work and now I’m dying for him to do Georgia as one of the next few parts of his 52 states project.
Plus what’s not to love about an album with song names like “The Black Hawk War, Or, How To Demolish An Entire Civilization And Still Feel Good About Yourself In The Morning, Or, We Apologize For The Inconvenience But You’re Gonna Have To Leave Now, Or, ‘I Have Fought The Big Knives And Will Continue To Fight…”
2. Weezer – Make Believe
Beverly Hills was a catchy song, one everyone should have been humming most of the summer, but the main reason I love this so is because of the song that follows it, “Perfect Situation,” which, in my mind, is a perfect song in every way imaginable, it’s a classic Rivers Cuomo pop hook with a bounce inducing rock vibe, it’s no surprise it’s the most played song on my iTunes/iPod.
Aside from that standout track, the rest is just so Weezer, follows on from the Blue and Green albums nicely…
3. Jack Johnson – In Between Dreams
To be perfectly honest, this cd could have been “Sitting, Waiting, Wishing” and 13 remixes of it and I’d have loved it… But nooooo, Jack had to include great songs from start to finish like “Staple It Together,” “Do You Remember” and “Better Together.” It has a superb laid back vibe, lazy days strumming a 6 string and all those cliches.
It was good enough to make me get “Bushfire Fairytales” and make me wonder why the hell I had never heard of him before, had I really been living under a rock?
4. Coldplay – X & Y
“From the top of the first page, to the end of the last day” proclaims the opening track of perhaps the years most hyped album, and even though it’s cool to be hating on the ol’ Coldplay, I’m going to say I enjoyed this immensely, even more so following the concert at the end of September… Only a song or two makes this tumble to 4th position, “Fix You” is, in my opinion, a pretty weak song overall, and a horrific choice for 2nd single, but like I say, that’s only my opinion…
“Speed Of Sound,” “Square One” and “Talk” alone make this one of this years best, the rest is just solid filler.
5. White Stripes – Get Behind Me Satan
Following on from the almighty “Elephant” was never going to be an easy task, so Jack and Meg keep the old formula of catchy short songs while busting out a few new instruments, classic example being “My Doorbell,” Jack, where did your piano playing come from? While this would probably have been one of the high “bubbling under” CD’s, seeing them live at Music Midtown pushes it up, they played nearly every song on here and it was just fantastic.
Plus I love the cover, Jack looks like some greasy mariachi, who else could pull that off? Awesome…
Bubbling Under: Death Cab For Cutie – Plans, Ben Folds – Songs For Silverman, Kanye West – Late Registration, Bloc Party – Silent Alarm, Lucinda Williams – Live At The Filmore
1. Serenity
I went in hoping it would be like a 2 hour episode of the show, but it was so much more involving, it now makes me think that it always should have belonged on the big screen, this had enough moments and sweeping visuals to rival anything that came out of LucasFilms in the last 30 years. Usually movies like this involving an ensemble cast (like Star Trek for instance) can get bogged down with far too many sub-plots just so everyone can get screen time, not this one… It’s direct and to the point… River knows a dark secret and The Alliance want to stop that secret getting out, and it’s 2 hours of action and suspence that wraps it all up… Plus it has kickass battle sequences, and enough of the dry wit that made Firefly so endearing, I dont know who gets the best lines, Mal, Jayne or Wash… They are all great.
2. The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy
I had a few reservations about this movie adaptation… The biggest one was Mos Def as Ford Prefect, now if you asked me who I’d have play Ford in the movie, I could have went down to the local Office Depot and written on every sheet of paper in there and still not reached Mos Def, but he plays the role very well. Another reservation was the position (or lack thereof) of Zaphod Beeblebrox’s second head, the teaser trailer didn’t show much, but it was very different, and also slightly annoying, but at least it wasn’t around for long.
Overall, it was a great adaptation of a very bizarre body of work and I think hardcore fans will love it, even though there are slight changes it’s not like the entire Hitchhikers universe has a solid base as each adaptation was different in someway. Everyone else will find it a surreal movie with great laughs, but they’ll miss out on all the in jokes, like the music at the start and a certain robot waiting in line on Vogosphere… But it’s all good.
3. Star Wars Episode III: Revenge of the Sith
Now I’ll say this only once, if you can, see this movie in IMAX, you’ll thank me for it as you can finally see the scope of the movie George Lucas made, it’s awesome… We watched Episode II right before leaving and the special effects in that looked dated after only three years (three loooooong years) but this holds up on the big, big screen… From the battle at the start (where more than a few interesting developments occur) to the showdowns between Anakin and Obi-Wan and Palpatine and Yoda, it’s all crystal clear, and just plain beautiful… And finally we get to see two proper jedis in their prime go at it for a decent amount of time, the scenes with Anakin and Obi-Wan are beautifully choreographed with lightsabers moving all over the place at amazing speed.
As with all the movies, the middle bit did seem to drag on a little longer than it needed, especially with the high action opening and endings, but there had to be a story in there somewhere. Personally I think this was as good as The Empire Strikes Back, but not better, nothing tops Empire in my book… Easily the best of the “Republic” trilogy (for lack of a better description).
4. King Kong
It’s a long movie, it does drag for the first 20 to 30 minutes, but that aside it’s excellent, once they reach Skull Island it’s non-stop action involving a whole manner of creatures (including some that will make you squirm) and it doesn’t let up all the way to the finale on top of the Empire State Building. Of course the special effects take centre stage here, Kong looks fantastic (another great job by Andy Serkis), there is real emotion coming from the giant gorilla and I kid you not, the ending will leave you bawling… Naomi Watts is good as Ann Darrow, she has that damsel in distress screaming down pat but Jack Black is awesome as the slimy Carl Denham who looks to be for more comedic value at the start but shows his way of manipulating people and eventually Kong as the movie goes on.
5. Batman Begins
It’s the usual Batman back story, Bruce Wayne see’s his parents killed by a mugger, he then vows vengeance on the evil of Gotham City, he spends his life travelling the world, learning the appropriate skills needed and when he’s old enough, he creates the Batman persona. The start of this film focuses on Bruce learning the mystic ways of the ninja off Ra’s Al Ghul, flashing back and forth to Bruce’s early life, once his training is complete, Bruce returns to Gotham to single handedly save it just as The Scarecrow arrives…
It’s a pretty cool movie visually, showing the origins of the Batcave, Batsuit, Batmobile and Batman’s relationship with Jim Gordon, played by a very un-Gary Oldman-like Gary Oldman, and is very close to the dark nature of Tim Burton’s Batman movies. It’s, again like Star Wars Episode III, recommended you see it in IMAX if possible, the halloucination scenes will most likely make you feel a little dizzy.
Bubbling Under: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Crash, Sin City, Mr. & Mrs. Smith, Fever Pitch
So there you go…
It’s been a while since I went to a movie theatre, I think it was when Robyn and I went to see Serenity, so when King Kong came around, I HAD to see it…
And words can’t properly describe it, so this will have to do…
Seriously, it was that good…
OK, I’m sure you know the story, a film crew goes to the appropriately named Skull Island for an exotic location shoot and discovers a colossal giant gorilla who takes a shine to their female blonde star, who the natives try to sacrifice…

It is recommended, but only if you can sit there for 3 hours… What’s with these epic length movies nowadays? Even Harry Potter is 2½ hours long and Chronicles of Narnia isn’t far off… I blame Peter Jackson.
I’ve seen this iTunes Signature Maker thing bouncing around a few places today, so I figured I’d join in and see what the fuss was about…
Why?
People often ask me what music I listen to, and I find it difficult to describe my enormous music collection in just a few sentences. So I created iTSM to answer in sound a question I cannot answer in words.
iTSM selects a small number of your “favorite” tracks based on some simple selection criteria, such as the number of times you have played them or the rating you have assigned them. Then it analyzes the audio content of these files, combining a small bit of each of them to create the signature.
So after playing around with it (50 most played songs, one song per artist & album), here’s what it threw up in return…
Or download it here (1.99mb mp3, 2:10)…
For those who think it’s a bit fuzzy, here’s the playlist in order:
A bit eclectic, kinda…
I’m not so sure about paying $1.99 for something you can see for free already, maybe if the store expands to, say, Battlestar Galactica and things that I tend to miss on a regular basis then it would be worth while
Guess what…
NBC Universal and Apple today announced an unprecedented lineup of new primetime, cable, late-night and classic TV shows, including primetime hits such as “Law & Order” and late-night favorites such as sketches from “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno” on the iTunes Music Store. iTunes now offers more than 300 episodes of 16 popular TV shows for viewing on a computer or iPod
FUCK YES!!!
Add to this shows like Law & Order, Monk, Late Night with Conan O’Brien and classic Knight Rider… Sweetness…
Now all Apple needs to do is hammer out a deal with CBS for CSI and FOX for Family Guy and what not and I’ll be sorted…
