  • Olympic Fever

Yesterday was a pretty boring day while we waited for the non existant snow to come, Robyn ended up napping for a few hours in the evening which meant one thing for me, boring Sunday evening TV…

But no, there are the Winter Olympics to enjoy…

To be honest, up until Friday I had completely forgotten about the Winter Olympics even being on this year. But last night was some great viewing with the crazy Ski Jumpers, insane Lugers(?), super Speed Skaters, gnarly Snowboarders and crazyinsanesupergnarly Downhill Skiers!

As a side note, why is it called Downhill Skiing? What else are they gonna do? Uphill Skiing? Now THAT I’d pay to see…

Robyn woke up as the Speed Skating started and immediately made fun of Apolo Ohno’s name, but then came the Snowboarding halfpipe and the antics of “The Flying Tomato” Shaun White.

Shaun White during the Olympic Mens Snowboarding Halfpipe competition

Seriously, this kid makes me feel way too old, he’s like 19 and has more gold medals in various competitions than I’ve had hot dinners during my lifetime. I think Robyn liked it too, she was cheering for the tomato, and I tried to impress her by spewing stuff like:

Ohhh, frontside fakie 360 grab into a McTwist

(What can I say, I was a wannabe skateboarder back in the days before skateboarding was cool and I’m an X-Games addict)

Alas we didnt see if White won the gold as we turned over for Grey’s Anatomy, but I found out he did (and shit, this wasn’t even live programming, so I could have known in advance). The other main talking points were Bode Miller and Daron Rahlves losing out in the Downhill and Ohno bailing out on the last few laps of the Speed Skating short track semi (hehe, ohno! he didn’t!). I was kinda cheering for him, which got Robyn asking if I was now following the US or the British team… To be fair, I don’t see NBC showing much in the way of the British Olympic team during primetime.

The British team isn’t well known for Speed Skating, but in Curling, the womens team rule! Led on by Colin Hendry lookalike (seriously) Rhona Martin, seriously, they are separated at birth, they are the defending champions… Who else do they have? Ummm. Skier Alain Baxter who won the bronze at Salt Lake City but was eventually DQ for taking a Vicks nasal spray… I’m sure there are others.

After last nights few hours, I’m wondering if a season pass for the Olympics is a good idea…

  • Dick Cheney Caps Some Ass…

US Vice-President Dick Cheney has accidentally shot and injured a man during a quail hunting trip. Mr Cheney had turned round to shoot at a bird, unaware that Mr Whittington was behind him, he sprayed Mr Whittington with shotgun pellets. “This is something that happens from time to time. You know, I’ve been peppered pretty well myself,” Ranch owner Katheryn Armstrong said. It’s like Counter-Strike, when people end up shooting their own team for shits and giggles…

  • Grey’s Anatomy

    What the fuck???

I knew it was coming, but that was fucking awesome… God bless TiVo for letting us rewind it and watch it in slow motion, frame-by-frame…

  • Ummm, Yeah…

Snow day lasted all of 3 seconds, well not quite, but the snow melted as soon as it touched the ground, most disappointing.

But I have high, high hopes for later on tonight.

If I don’t get a proverbial winter wonderland tomorrow morning, I’ll be pretty pissed.

  • Round The World Record

Steve Fossett has broken the record for the longest non-stop flight in aviation history. Fossett took the record as he flew over Shannon in Ireland. In total he has flown 26,389.3 miles around the globe since lift-off on Wednesday. He eclipsed the distance record set by Dick Rutan and Jeana Yeager, who logged 40,212km (24,987 miles) during a non-stop, non-refuelled trip around the globe in their Voyager aircraft in 1986.

It’s not often I go for these Flickr Toys, infact I think this is only the second I’ve done after that big Flickr Badge phenomenon… But I liked the idea of this one, giving some love back to the people of Flickr…

You may see your Flickr user name on here, if your a regular reader there is a good chance actually, so feel free to leave a note pointing your user name out. Also feel free to upload your own show of [h], it’s what makes the world go round afterall.

  • Change Over

So it looks like everything went well, easier than I thought it would be… And since I’m in a new place I made a few changes…

Favourites: Yes, favourites are now accessable (finally), just click on the star next to an entry and it should take you to the list of favourite entries

Permalinks: I’m finally able to use the nice WordPress generated permalinks, so instead of this being http://www.gregorsmith.com/blog/?p=1336 it’s now http://www.gregorsmith.com/blog/2006/02/10/change-over/, though the original url will also work.

target=’_blank’: It’s something I was prone to doing for a very long time, but now after reading this entry at Airbag I’ve realised that forcing new windows is just so lame, so why bother… In this day and age, people can just open in new tabs with the click of a scroll button, so all references to opening new windows is gone.

  • Migration

Things may get a bit funky over the next few days as I’m biting the bullet and joining the world of paid hosting at Dreamhost

Even though I’ve pretty much got an unlimited free deal, the lure of 20gb storage and 1tb bandwidth for less than $10 a month is just too good to refuse. Don’t get me wrong, there’s nothing wrong with my current hosts at RUWebby, but I feel there is only so long you can mooch for free for… I’m one of their biggest users and I don’t pay a dime, and it’s time I went out on my own, so the DNS should hopefully propogate over the next few days and then I’ll be all set up.

See you on the other side.

EDIT (09/02/06): Looks like everything went smoothly… Now to get to business.

  • Every Episode of House…

Inspired by Dave’s little take on House, here comes the definative 12 step list of every episode of House

    1. Something bad happens to someone, it’s usually a very dramatic seizure of some sort.
    2. That awesome Massive Attack song “Teardrop” plays.
    3. Commercial.
    4. They bring the person in. House gives reasons why that patient shouldn’t be his but takes him/her in anyway.
    5. Initial diagnosis, it’s usually a simple one so they think they know what the problem is. Patient gets treated.
    6. Patient has another dramatic seizure. Dammit, the diagnosis was wrong…
    7. All the doctors go to the meeting room to sit around the whiteboard and think of other possibilities. House verbally abuses the person who made the original diagnosis.
    8. Patient is retested, treated for something else. House goes to the clinic against his will to verbally abuse some patients while playing his Nintendo DS or PSP.
    9. House makes some asshole comment to someone, usually the patient or patients family… Meanwhile Foreman and either Cameron or Chase break into the patients house to look for clues.
    10. Patient is near death, they need to REALLY figure out what the problem is.
    11. They figure out what the problem is just in the nick of time… Patient goes home happy.
    12. The show ends with House proving he has a heart of gold somewhere where no one but the audience can see him.

    But it’s still great…
