The Senate approved a $781 billion increase in US borrowing authority Thursday aimed at averting a possible government default on debt this month. For those keeping score, the deficit is now an astoundingly stupifying $8.965 trillion. Didn’t Bill Clinton leave the country with a budget surplus of over $200 billion?

The Mountain Done Broke…
Brokeback Mountain author Annie Proulx lays down a rant and a half against The Oscars. In a nutshell, she basically calls the 6,000 voting members of The Academy white rich secular retards involved with Scientology, then questions why they didn’t heap praise and throw awards at “her” movie… Sour grapes indeed. March Madness Bracketology 2006
After last years horrific attempt at bracketology, this year will be different, I’ve been following the whole NCAA season (as opposed to reaming my knowledge off an Xbox video game like last year)… This year I have a whole slew of scientific mathematical equations on my side, I can’t fail… Or can I?
Well, maybe I can… Far too many variables going on like Michigan State, Indiana and Boston College to name a few, but I do hope Gonzaga Bulldogs ride Adam Morrison and JP Batista as far as possible…

V For Vendetta
As I might have mentioned, Robyn and I went to see the preview of V For Vendetta tonight and by all accounts, it was very, very cool…

I had read the graphic novel, so I knew what to expect, but the first change between this and the novel was the time shift, it’s now set about 15 years in the future, as opposed to “modern times” (well, 1997) and a few of the events are changed around slightly, but overall it has kept to the original novel very closely. Another change is the dropping of the nuclear war that brought about the totalitarian government in the UK in favour of the more topical “America’s War.”
To sum it up briefly, it follows V (Hugo Weaving, who I kept expecting to say “Mr. Anderson” or “Frodo Baggins of The Shire”), who plots a rather theatrical way to overthrow the facist government and kill all those who have wronged him in the space of a year, starting and ending on November 5th, aka Guy Fawkes Night in the UK. Along the way he rescues and eventually recruites Evey (Natalie Motherfucking Portman) to his “cause.”
Now, some people aren’t happy about the useage of a terrorist/freedom fighter/anarchist as a hero (more like anti-hero if anything) and that’s all fair and good, but c’mon now, it’s just a freaking action movie… An action movie I really enjoyed… Though I have to admit I felt somewhat indifferent when the Houses of Parliament were blown up at the end, most people around me thought that was a cool bit, but I guess it’s comparable to them seeing the White House blown up in Independence Day, it was kinda cool, but a bit scary at the same time…

Unintentional CNN Comedy
CNN weighs in on the big US Ports to be owned and operated by a Dubai based company hullaballo with quite possibly the best poll in the history of polls… Who would you rather have overseeing operations at US ports? An Arab-based ports company or US-based mafia…For real, I’m not making this up!
And to make it even more bizarre, as of right now and after nearly 56,000 votes, the Mafia leads by a near 2 to 1 majority.

So basically 2 out of every 3 Americans would rather have organised crime running their ports as opposed to a legitimate company that just happens to be based in the Middle East. Says it all really…

Rangers Name Paul Le Guen As New Manager
Rangers name Paul Le Guen as new manager. Only the 12th manager in Rangers history, next season should be an interesting one if the promise of transfer funds proves to be true…

Villarreal 1 – 1 Rangers
After the enthralling 2-2 draw in Glasgow two weeks ago, Rangers had to win in Spain in order to progress to the quarter finals of the Champions League, but after a fighting battle they could only walk away with another draw to go out on the shitty away goals rule.

Well, that’s the season pretty much over… Rangers are 21 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premier League with 10 games to go (a possible 30 points), they are out of both domestic cup competitions and now out of the Champions League. It was a brave effort, further than any Scottish team has been before since the Champions League’s inception, and I fully expected them to capitulate after a disasterous run of results before the first leg.
So Alex McLeish bows out at the end of this season, his last season might look like a disaster on paper, but his overall record pretty much speaks for its self. 2 league titles, 5 domestic cups and qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League, all in the space of 4 years.

Kirby Puckett 1960 – 2006
The baseball world lost one of its most beloved legends Monday with the passing of Hall of Fame outfielder Kirby Puckett, who died one day after suffering a stroke. He was 44. Puckett spent his entire 12-year career with the Minnesota Twins, leading the Twins to World Series titles in 1987 and 1991 while compiling a .318 lifetime batting average, 2,304 hits and 1,085 RBI. He was the MVP of the 1987 ALCS, made 10 straight All-Star teams from 1986-95, led the American League in batting (.339) in 1989 and collected six Gold Gloves for his play in the outfield before being forced to retire in 1996. He was also inducted to the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2001 in his first appearance on the ballot.
