Record-breaking quarterback Brett Favre has decided to retire after 17 seasons. Favre leaves the NFL with his name atop several career passing categories. In 2007, he set the record for passing TDs (442), passing yards (61,655) and wins by a starting QB (160) and interceptions (288). Including the playoffs, he played in 275 consecutive games.

Dodging Death
Mick Jagger escaped an assassination attempt at the hands of Hells Angels in 1969, a BBC documentary says. Apparently they planned to go by sea but the boat was caught in a storm and all members tossed overboard. Since when did the Hells Angels have a navy? I mean, they’re a biker gang, you’d think they’d go with their strengths there…

Did Roger Clemens Lie?
Roger Clemens’ denial of steroid use warrants further investigation, Congress said Wednesday in asking the Justice Department to determine whether the star pitcher lied under oath in testimony to a House committee. Never mind the two failing wars, an economy that’s bottoming out, a housing market that’s deader than dead, the gas prices that are soaring through the roof and a dollar that’s not worth the paper it’s printed on, it’s nice to see Congress is getting to the heart of the important stuff… Lying baseball players…

A Death in the Family
I think my old video iPod is on its last legs, which is a shame as its barely 2½ years old. I think its down to a combination of age, overuse in its younger days and underuse since its big brother, the iPhone, came on the scene.
Here’s the prognosis, it charges just fine, but it lasts approx. 25 minutes at 50% volume, which doesn’t last long enough for my morning commute (or indeed my evening commute), and that, well, kinda sucks… 25 minutes worth of music means 0.2 seconds of video, so henceforth it’ll be known as “the old iPod.”
I’m desperate for a remedy, maybe a battery replacement, as I’m not quite ready to let go of my old friend. Can anyone think of any other solutions? Sure, I could just retire it and use the iPhone, but I don’t want to invest in a headphone jack adapter for it so it’ll play nice with the FM modulator, and the iPod wired remote doesn’t work with it so skipping tracks becomes a life threatening event, which isnt cool…

Like Shooting Fish in a Barrell
The US Navy has successfully struck a disabled spy satellite with a missile fired from a warship in waters west of Hawaii, military officials say. Operatives had only a 10-second window to hit the satellite which went out of control shortly after it was launched in December 2006. But it is not yet known how successful the operation was – the missile needed to pierce the bus-sized satellite’s fuel tank, containing more than 450kg (1,000lbs) of toxic hydrazine, which would otherwise be expected to survive re-entry. The Pentagon said confirmation that the fuel tank has been hit should be available within 24 hours.

Blu-ray Wins Hi-Def War
Following mass defections to Sony’s Blu-ray format, Toshiba is admitting defeat and ceasing all HD-DVD production. There are plenty of reasons Blu-ray won out in the end, but the biggest had to be Sony’s gamble of tying it to the PlayStation 3, which makes it the most popular Hi-Def DVD player on the market right now (and possibly the cheapest).

Writers Strike is Over
It’s official: WGA strike is over. “The strike is over,” Patric Verrone said, dispassionately but with the hint of a smile. “Our membership has voted. Writers can go back to work.” Sweet, some TV shows could be back on the air as soon as next month.

Milestones
A few weeks ago we celebrated a year here in North Carolina, and last week I personally celebrated a year in my job. And I won’t lie, its been a looooong time since I held a job for over a year, well one that didn’t involve working in a basement. So to mark the end of that “transitional” year, I plan to make a few goals for myself that I hope to accomplish come February 10th 2009 in no particular order.
- Lose some weight:
Ahhh, this old chestnut, right now I’m over 2 bills, way over, far away from pushing 300 I hasten to add, but over none the less. I’m not even sure what my ideal weight is but I’d like to lose *something*. I’d also like to eat more healthy (hard considering my diet is awful) and get more exercise, this all goes hand in hand. - Visit another state:
Last year I made it to Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Pennsylvania for the first time, this year I’d like to visit another state I haven’t been to before. Where? I don’t know but I’d like to visit *somewhere* - Move house:
We’ve already spotted where we’d like to live once our renting days are over, now we just need to wait for it to be built and save up for a down payment. This is probably the big one for this year. - Not buy so many material items:
I’m a gadgetphile, always have been, most likely always will be. Last year we splurged on the Wii and two iPhones, the year before we got a desktop and laptop computer and a new camera, year before that was a camera, new mobile phones and a Video iPod. This year I hope not to want as much, or want but not buy. This can also be filed as “Do More, Spend Less” - Stress less:
Not stress so much over turning 30, finding grey hairs and balding. Plan more for the future as the last 5 or so years have passed by waaaay too quickly, who’s to say the next 5 wont go by just as quickly, then I’ll be 35 with no plans. Scary thought.
So there we go, five times to do in the next 365 days (give or take), can’t be too difficult can it?
Check back in a year to find out
