It’s finally happened, I’ve officially become an aloof designer…
A friend was showing me the design of a background image they were gonna use for a website and I went off on how repeating background images (this was diagonal lines packed close together) draw the eyes away from the actual content and then how they shouldn’t be using tables because CSS is so much better than basic tables… And to cap it all of I suggested a much more minimal design, less is more and all that.
And then it hit me… All my time in Dreamless, o8, YayHooray and HumHum has made me an aloof designer, seemingly incapable of helping people “below” me, but they’re not below me. The sad, and somewhat ironic, part is I wouldn’t be here without the help of other aloof deisgners, they turned me into a fellow aloof designer but now I’m bitter, jaded and unable to design “cutesy” sites, it all has to be standards complient, valid XHTML & CSS, minimalistic designs or else…
What have I become?

Two Point Five Billion Pixels…
About a year ago I mentioned that “Some fool has decided to stitch 196 separate images together to make a gigapixel image of Bryce Canyon in Utah.” Well some more fools have decided to up the ante with a 2.5 gigapixel image of Delft University in Holland…
Here are the mind boggling stats:
- Final image dimensions: 78,797 x 31,565 pixels
- Number of pixels in final image: 2,487,227,305 (2.5 gigapixel)
- Final image file format: 24-bit colour bitmap
- Final image file size: 7.5 GBytes
- Number of source images: 600
- Number of pixels in source images: 3,537,408,000 (600 images * 3008*1960)
- Lens focal length: 400 mm (equivalent to 600 mm on a 35 mm camera)
- Aperture: F22, Shutter speed: 1/100, ISO: 125
- Horizontal field of view of final image: 93 degrees
- Time required to capture component images: 1 hour and 12 minutes
- Time required to match overlapping images: 20 hours
- Time required to optimise project: 4 hours
- Time required to compose the image: 3 full days using 5 high-end pcs
- Time required to blend seams / correct misalignments / finalise image: 2 days
7 days work to put the whole thing together, and if it was printed out it would measure 6.67 m by 2.67 m at 300 dpi, and the level of detail in it is quite extraordinary, you can zoom in to read car licence plates… Madness.

Halo and Hummers
It was another busy weekend that involved countless trips to the local BJ’s, Home Depot and Lowe’s as we continue fixing up the home slowly but surely.
The last of the Library knick-knacks were unpacked, and Phil had some fun with his three Master Chief figures from Halo…
I wonder what goes through his mind sometimes…
Then came the ultimate redneck revelation… But first some back story, In Georgia the percentage of Trucks and SUV’s to regular cars is slightly over 50%, and we laugh at trucks with jacked up suspensions as they are completly redneck… And on Sunday we saw a jacked up Hummer H2. The Hummer has a pretty high ride height as it is, and this one was just ridiculous…
See, completely ridiculous…
