Because TiVo Wasn’t Enough
Yes, you read that right… TiVo isn’t enough for me anymore… So I’ve turned our desktop into a home media center (centre?). Well, thats not strictly true, I jammed a TV Tuner card into it and made it a secondary DVR, but it’s the thought that counts.
The real reason behind this is sometimes it’d be nice to watch something else while Robyn watches her freak shows on TiVo, and I’d also like to record as much of the World Cup while we’re away in the UK as possible without causing a meltdown in our Now Playing list. But now I’m undecided what software to use, sure, I’d like something like Windows XP Media Center, but at the same point, I’d rather not replace the entire OS just for the sake of having a fancy application. I’ve already tried MediaPortal which looks and acts like a Media Center clone, but I was having trouble getting it to show a picture, never mind trying to set up the EPG, and lets face it, what use is a DVR without a program guide?
Right now I’m using a trial version of BeyondTV 4, and it’s pretty nifty, the only downside is the lack of other media support and the eventual price tag ($70) once the trial runs out. Once that runs out I might try to get MediaPortal up and running again, or if anyone with a similar setup can offer up some recommendations (alas it’s Windows based, so no MythTV before anyone says it) that would be most appreciated.

Snoop Dogg Banned From UK
Snoop Dogg has been banned from entering the United Kingdom ever again following his arrest for affray and violent disorder at London’s Heathrow Airport last month. You could say he got Heathr0wned! But seriously, a lifetime ban is harsh!

Flickr finally moves out of beta to become Flickr Gamma. Some nice changes, some not so nice changes, can’t please all the people all the time I guess…

Moving Grey’s Anatomy
ABC announces it is moving Grey’s Anatomy to Thursday nights at 9pm. This seriously blows, Desperate Housewives and Grey’s Anatomy was the perfect end to a weekend, now it’s up against CBS’ powerhouse CSI and possibly the double whammy of NBC’s My Name Is Earl and The Office if they stay in their current timeslots. Steven Seagal Rocks?
So I’m looking through the upcoming concerts on Ticketmaster, seeing if anything catches my eye when all of a sudden, this one does…
Steven Seagal & Thunderbox
Variety Playhouse, Atlanta, GA
Tue, Jun 13, 2006 08:00 PMNo way! that’s surely a rip off, maybe an ironic name like Dangermouse’s Gnarls Barkley gig. But no, awww hell to the no, it’s actually Steven fucking Seagal, you know, Hard To Kill, Under Seige and all that jazz…

I so want to see this just out of morbid curiosity, but alas it’s too close to our UK trip to even think about…

So Long Cocktail Party?
University of Georgia President Michael Adams objects to the phrase “World’s Largest Outdoor Cocktail Party” to describe the annual Georgia-Florida football game. And he has asked CBS Television and the city of Jacksonville to not use the phrase when promoting the game the network televises each year. The request is part of Adams’ push to curb on-campus alcohol abuse and change UGA’s image as a party school.

Homeward Bound
First a bit of a backstory, for the last few months I had been chasing a job, a very nice job by all means with very nice people who waited and waited on me to get my work authorization card and social security number but after all was said and done, they decided I wasn’t the right fit for them. Now I was more than a little disapointed by this, especially after all the time and effort I had put into it, like the six hour interview last month. I had to pick myself up the next day for my driving test, which I duely passed so I was pretty proud about that, it was then Robyn came up with an idea…Since I most likely wont have a job (sigh) in June, we should go visit my family in Scotland as Delta are introducing a direct flight next month from Atlanta to Edinburgh and as such, they were running some good deals and we should take it, even if it’s only a week…
Well, that week became 11 days as we leave Atlanta on June 16th and return on June 27th, which means we’re also going to do a little sightseeing around Scotland too, and possibly London with a day out in Paris via Eurostar. So we’re more than a little psyched about this impromptu trip, Robyn gets to meet the members of my family who couldn’t make the wedding and I’ll get to catch up on people I haven’t seen for nearly 2½ years, plus I get to show Robyn around Edinburgh and Glasgow and beyond (thanks to a bit of forward planning via Google Earth).
Of course, this all hinges on the small matter of my residency interview in 11 days time…

Scotland 5 – 1 Bulgaria
Scotland 5 – 1 Bulgaria. Holy crap, Scotland in “world beater stunner!” But seriously, check out the goals, the 4th one was an awesome, and very un-Scotland like passing move that had shades of the imfamous Brazil goal in 1970 to it, get in!

Fonts On Football Jerseys
Fonts on football jerseys. Ever wanted to know what font teams like Real Madrid and Bayern München use on their jerseys? Well it’s most likely Peignot™ and Industria™ respectively… [via]

Beep Beep!
Beware Atlanta drivers, the roads just got a little more dangerous… Yes, in my ongoing attempt to assimilate myself into everyday society, I’ve finally passed my driving test at the 3rd time of asking (failed once in the UK 10 years ago (almost to the day) and once over here already).
Now I thought I’d be cute and post up a scan of my license, but nah, the picture kinda sucks and it’s too much effort blurring out all the important info, so I’ll leave you with this instead.

Beatles Lose Apple Court Battle
The Beatles have lost their court challenge against Apple Computer over its iPod and iTunes download service. They claimed the US firm broke a deal aimed at ensuring there would not be two Apples in the music industry, but Mr Justice Anthony Mann ruled that the computer company used the Apple logo in association with its store, not the music, and so was not in breach.
