When Sony announced that its PlayStation 3 would be backwards compatible with both PS2 and the PSone, it was thought (and Sony indicated) that the next-gen console would provide this functionality through emulation. However, a new report in the Japanese technology magazine Ultra One (partially translated by IGN) suggests that backwards compatibility with the PS2 is actually achieved through physical hardware, not emulation.

Bad Show Adult Swim…

The free download of the new Danger Doom EP is a sweet idea, I mean, I really liked The Mouse and The Mask… But who’s idea was it to be encoded in 64kbps?

That’s just not cool…

One More Candle and a Trip Around the Sun
Yesterday was my 28th birthday, and Robyn thought it would be a good idea to invite a group of friends to go to the ballpark and celebrate with us. So about 20 or so of us piled into a Party Bus outside Robyn’s office and off we went…Did I mention this bus had a stocked free bar? An Xbox 360? A karakoe machine? A pole for dancing? No, well, 3 out of those 4 things ended up making a shy, reserved guy into a motherfucking STAR! Hell, I was all fucked up!
But first things first… We went on down to the game and it was a pretty enjoyable game, but man, people were just handing me beers left and right. What could a poor boy do? I mean I tried to take it easy, slow and steady, but I had 3 beers by the time we got there, a further 5 or so in the game and Duane was pouring out some ample measures of tequila on the way home. That’s when “teh funny™” kicked in…
Robyn’s friend Charles was doing some MCing on the way to the game, but on the way home I grabbed that stick and proceeded to rock that bitch! Sometimes in an acapella style. I even proceeded to tear a wannabe heckler to shreds, fool had no game. I should mention it was like a 10 year old kid, moot point though. Then the pole dancing started, or was it the other way around? I don’t really remember much, the adrenaline rush brought on by the rabid audience took over and that was all she wrote… I mean, I had poor Duane and Su in hysterics.
Then, as these things usually end, I passed out in the car on the way home and woke up sick as a dog this morning, the price of living fast I guess. But apparently everyone had a great time so it was well worth the weeks and months of upcoming humiliation, hell, I’d do it again in a heartbeat…
Dave and Lori have pictures up on flickr, Lori also has a small review on her blog.

Coppa Del Mundo
I was born in a World Cup year, the day before the start of the 1978 Word Cup in Argentina to be exact, so every 4 years I get the double whammy of my birthday quickly followed by the start of the World Cup. Actually, last time around it started on my birthday, but I digress… This years World Cup is just around the corner, and, as usual, I’m pretty psyched about it.
As I was born in a World Cup year, it tends to follow periods in my life, this one being no exception. Alas I was way too young to remember anything about the 1978 World Cup first hand, what with only being a few days old when Archie Gemmil scored possibly the greatest goal ever. The same goes for the 1982 World Cup in Spain, I was only 4 then, and I dont remember a damn thing, of course now I remember Dave Narey’s classic “toepoke” rocket against Brazil, and Zico’s free kick reply, not to mention Marco Tardelli’s bug eyed celebration against West Germany or German keeper Harald Schumacher almost decapitating France’s Patrick Battiston and walking away without so much as a booking. Yes, those were different times…
Now, Mexico 86 is where I remember stuff vividly, 8 years old, a year later we would move house, my dad rented (rented!) a VCR to tape matches as the time difference meant games would be on way too late for me and my brother (who wants an 8 and 10 year old up late anyways?). Who can forget Gordon Strachan’s goal against West Germany, and his superbly silly “too-small-to-jump-the-advertising-boards-so-i’ll-hop-beside-them-instead” celebration? Or SFA president Ernie Walker calling the Uruguay team “scum of the earth” following their game against Scotland when José Batista of Uruguay was sent off after less than a minute, a record that still stands in World Cup finals…. How about Diego Maradonna’s “hand of god” goal against England (us Scots LOVED that one) or his equally memorable 2nd against England? (Let’s face it, it’s so good it deserves crazy Spanish alternate commentary). Good times really, except for Scotland glorious failure in the “group of death” (Denmark, West Germany and Uruguay).
Italia 90 was a pretty boring affair, it was memorable for me as it was that period in between primary and secondary school, a summer spent playing football in the streets/any grassy area from dawn until dusk (and sometimes beyond). Scotland had what looked like an easier group than 1986, Costa Rica, Sweden and Brazil, and as usual, glorious failure would ensue but not before Murdo MacLeod got his bell well and truely rung by a Branco free kick in Scotland’s last match. An unexpected defat for reigning champions Argentina against Cameroon in the opening match kicked things off but the most memorable moment was easily Paul Gascoigne’s crying following his booking against West Germany in the semi finals, that and Roberto Baggio’s sublime goal against Czechoslovakia. Yes, it was that boring…
USA 1994, a strange World Cup indeed, who would have guessed that this World Cup would break attandance records, my family were on holiday in Florida when it began, in fact we weren’t even supposed to see the first match as we were due to fly home, but some weird 24 hour delay ended with us being put up in the Hyatt hotel inside Orlando Airport, so we got the see the opening Germany vs. Bolivia match and the USA vs. Switzerland game the next day, score! We also got the see the infamous OJ Simpson White Bronco chase… It was also strange that there was no British teams, though one could argue Ireland was as much British than Irish with players like John Aldridge and Ray Houghton, who scored a cracker against Italy in their opening game, in their squad. Also teams like Sweden and Bulgaria progressed further than anyone would have expected, Saudi Arabian Saeed Owairan scored the goal of the tournament against Belguim, though Gheorghe Hagi’s audacious lob against Colombia was better in my opinion. In the end it was down to a Roberto Baggio penalty in the final… And he blew it.
France 98 was party time for me, Scotland had qualified again and since I was 20 at the time, it meant one thing, copious amounts of alochol… The opening game was world champions Brazil against Scotland, and in the true spirit of Scotland it meant a glorious 2-1 defeat (but we could have beaten them on any other day). A rousing draw against Norway followed and all we needed was a win against Morocco, a 3-0 defeat silenced that dream in a hurry, but we celebrated none the less with bottles of champagne in the Strathclyde Uni Student Union, who takes defeat better than us? Onto the rest of the competition, Argentina’s defeat of England was proabably the best game (in my humble opinion) of the tournament, and who could forget Dennis Bergkamps stunning control against Argentina? To top it off, I had a bet on France would win and it bagged me £160 for my troubles…
Korea/Japan 2002 was probably my least watched World Cup since Mexico 86, this was due to Scotland not qualifying and games being on in the morning and afternoon in the UK due to the time difference, and that meant I was working throughout the competition. I did see some of it though, the office I was working in set up a few TV’s in the cafeteria area so I saw parts of games like the second half of Ireland vs. Germany and Robbie Keanes thunderous last minute equaliser, the first half of Argentina vs. England and Beckhams penalty, the second half of Brazil vs. England and Ronaldiniho’s sweet free kick but my favourite was Jared Borgetti’s flick header against Italy, just perfect.
This brings us up to Germany 2006, another period in my life (married and living in America), Scotland failed to qualify again, and I’d rather not be clichéd and suddenly become a Trinidad & Tobago, Sweden and Paraguay supporter overnight as they are in England’s group, instead I’m going to follow the fortunes of the US team, though they have to make it out of a tough group (Italy, Ghana and the Czech Republic) if they want to perform better than the quarter final place in 2002. A bonus of our trip to the UK means I’ll most likely get to see a few games (like the USA vs Italy game on June 17th) instead of TiVoing them.

Quantum Leap’d
Ever had a moment when you wake up and you dont know where you are?
This happens a lot to me recently as I invariably doze off on the train home between Lindbergh and Sandy Springs, but today I woke up and I didn’t know when I was… Seriously, I now know how Sam Beckett feels…
The reason for this was a MARTA train that was showing a map from the freaking Olympics! Yes, 10 years ago! North Springs and Sandy Springs werent even marked as stations on the map, merely under construction. I wish I had my wits about me so I could have taken a picture of it on my phone.
It’s now my mission to find this MARTA train and bask in the glory of the Olympic map… Unless of course someone at MARTA notices the calendar has changed and covers it up.

Bad to Worse
I almost feel like I’m a jinx for the Braves now, cause that’s 3 out of 4 games I’ve went to that they have lost, and the last two have been absolute maulings. Seriously, a combined score of 20 – 6 against the Braves, that’s some bad karma, I’m sure some people have had a lifetime ban for less. The best way to describe todays game against the Los Angeles Dodgers of Los Angeles would be they kinda fell apart big time in the first and it all went downhill from there, it ended up 12-5 in favour of the Dodgers. We lasted til the start of the 7th inning, it was just a pain to watch. They had a brief resurgence in the 5th, but in the end it was nothing more than a consolation.
The game also gave me a chance to try out our fancy new Sony CyberShot DSC-H5/B that Robyn got me for my upcoming birthday, yes I got it early, she also got her main present early also… I have to say, I really like Sony cameras, all the cameras we’ve had have been Sony CyberShots, but this one is fantastic! The main selling point for me was the zoom, the ones I’ve usually used were 3X optical then a further 3X digital, which made the picture pretty grainy at full zoom, this one has an awesome 12X optical which was just downright perfect for taking pictures at the game today. Even though we were sitting close the the left field foul pole I was still able to get close ups of the pitchers and batters, I’d love to see what it’d be like in our normal seats…
Before I go, here is a sweet panorama taken in the cameras 16:9 shooting mode. Yes, widescreen baby!.

The Rising Cost of Video Games
Why there are no indie video games and why that’s bad for gamers. Did you know the average PS2 game costs $8M to make? I didn’t, and that will rise to around $15M to $20M once the PS3 comes around. Add in another $10M or so for marketing, crazy numbers.

The Da Vinci Code
So yeah, The Da Vinci Code, we actually saw this on Tuesday night, it’s only now I could bring myself to write about it after letting it marinate in my mind for 3 days… Take from that what you will.

So, incase you’ve lived under a rock for the past three years, this supposedly controversial film follows a professor of symbology, Robert Langdon, as he is called to the scene of a grisly murder in the Louvre. Along with a young French cryptographer Sophie Neveu, Langdon tries to solve the message left by the victim in order to preserve a secret kept for thousands of years, which could revolutionise the Christian faith.
First of all, I never read the book, I didn’t “get” what the big fuss was about, but I still figured it out after 15 minutes, well I had my suspicions, and they were pretty much confirmed about 45 minutes in, and from that point on it became a bit of a bore. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a good movie, just not the awe inspiring, faith shattering, next step in human evolution that the hype surrounding it would have you believe. I mean, people were starving themselves because of this? The biggest shame is Tom Hanks as Robert Langdon, he just doesnt look like he enjoyed doing this movie at all, and he has next to no chemistry with Audrey Tautou. The best performance, by far, was Paul Bettany’s portrayal of Silas, much better than some of his recent work, though Ian McKellan literally chews up the scenery in his brief appearances.
I’d say it’s a DVD rental, but most people will have already seen it by then methinks. As Flavor Flav said “don’t believe the hype.”
Yeeeeaaaahhhh Booooyyyy!

Trials and Errors
Now, I consider myself to be a pretty tech savvy person… I’ve learned everything I need to know about computers and all that shit by myself, usually through trial and error, be it designing a web page or building a computer and most things in between. But today I questioned my sanity, all thanks to Windows XP Media Center.
Yes, this is a follow on from my post last week about a DVR in the desktop PC, a few people recommended Media Center (henceforth known as MCE) so I bit the bullet and obtained a copy, first thing that alerted my spidey sense was the inability to upgrade, it was fresh or nothing, dang. Good thing we have a pretty much empty secondary hard drive, it would make a fantastic guinea pig. So I installed MCE, a few important drivers (audio and video), installed the TV Tuner card and pressed the green button on the remote…

Good start, the copy I used wasn’t a bust… After all the settings were set up, for lack of a better term, I was ready to play with it.

Before I jumped in at the deep end, I figured I’d look around at the supplementary options like photos and music and what not.

OK, photos from my recent trip to the Westin hotel all came through alright.

As did the music, though it was taking it’s sweet time in adding albums, so I went with a quick choice.

It had already found things like the album art, year of release and such likes, it could have dragged these from the ID3 tags, but apparently it was pulling this info from somewhere online as some albums didn’t have these.

While 10,000 Maniacs played away, I gave the MSN Messenger feature a try out, and it works pretty nice, though, I wouldn’t use the remote to enter text.

Now it was time to try the TV part, I installed WinTV which came with my tuner card also, and checked that first to make sure that was recieving a signal, which it was. So at 1pm there wasn’t much choice, Trya won by default before anyone thinks I’m a Tyra Banks Show fan.

A little bit of info on the program before we begin.

And this is where is all goes pear shaped, I’ve tried everything to get it working, every decoder option under the sun and then some but no, the damn thing wont budge.
So if I can’t get this to fly then it really limits my options for the PC DVR project, currently BeyondTV 4 is in the lead…

Employed
So yeah, after nearly 12 whole months of unemployment, I’ve finally managed to bag me one of them dang jobs things people go on about so much, so as of Wednesday I’ll be working for a little design and marketing studio close to Midtown Atlanta. I know 12 months sounds bad, but really, it’s only been a little over 2 since I could actually work legally, just for a little perspective. I guess it also acts as a big “neeeneeer” to those who thought this day would never come (me being one of them).
So everything is coming together just nicely over these last 2 months and Robyn and I couldn’t be happier, and now she can semi-relax as she doesnt have to worry about supporting us anymore. The only big hoop left for us to jump through is the final residency interview on Thursday, and by all accounts that should be nothing more than a formality. I’m still amazed at how quickly this is all happening, considering when we made the applications in January/February, we were told this could take as long as 18 months to 2 years…
I guess you could say life is good right now.
