Forget 1984, How About 2035?
Revolution, flashmobs, and brain chips, a grim vision of the future. Information chips implanted in the brain. Electromagnetic pulse weapons. The middle classes becoming revolutionary, taking on the role of Marx’s proletariat. The population of countries in the Middle East increasing by 132%, while Europe’s drops as fertility falls. “Flashmob” groups rapidly mobilised by criminal gangs or terrorists groups. This is the world in 30 years’ time envisaged by a Ministry of Defence team responsible for painting a picture of the “future strategic context” likely to face Britain’s armed forces.

Same Old Braves?
So, I’m sitting here watching the Braves do an oh, so familiar collapse an TBS, and I’m more missing the fact I won’t see a game for a long time rather than the depressing scoreline that currently stands at 11-1 to the Mets in the top of the 8th.
I’ve always been to at least one April game since I moved there in 2004, even going to the home opener last year, the early season game always have a good atmosphere, usually a full house and a lot of eager anticipation. Once May rolls around and the stifling summer heat comes in then the crowds drop off and usually they pick once the bandwagon rolls on, but not last year. That was genuine surprise, long after the Braves season unofficially ended, they still managed to draw decent crowds.
But I digress… This week has been hard, 3 win on the road I couldn’t listen to without playing $15 to MLB and now TBS isn’t on free cable, or even free TBS in HD OTA. Thankfully there isn’t another baseball team nearby or I’d be facing a local blackout, like Trashers hockey on FSN South or SportSouth as this is, apparently, Hurricanes country, even though Atlanta is only 75 or so miles further away than Raleigh.
So yeah, even though the Braves are getting blown out tonight, I wish I was at the game… That’s just the way I am.

Like a Dog With a Bone
Dick Cheney reasserts Saddam’s Iraq had ties to al-Qaeda, but a Pentagon report says the opposite. Maybe if he says it often enough, he’ll start to believe it and then maybe, just maybe we’ll all start to believe it too, even in the light of cold hard facts.

Shooting at CNN Center
One person has died following a shooting at the CNN Center complex, in what Atlanta police called a “domestic situation.” Scary situation, seeing as I know more than a few Turner employees. Also, good thing this didn’t happen yesterday, otherwise, given CNN Center’s proximity to the Georgia Dome, Atlanta could kiss any major event like the Final Four goodbye…

Prison Beatdown…
Thai inmate Samson Sor Siriporn boosted her chances of freedom by beating Japan’s Ayaka Miyano to win the vacant women’s WBC light flyweight title at the notorious “Bangkok Hilton” prison. Under the gaze of dozens of prison guards, Siriporn, a convicted drug dealer, battled through the unforgiving Thai heat to score a unanimous victory on points and kick-start parole proceedings for her early release.

French Train Sets Rail Record
A French train with a 25,000-horsepower engine and special wheels broke the world speed record Tuesday for conventional rail trains, reaching 356mph. It fell short, however, of beating the ultimate record set by Japan’s magnetically levitated train, which hit 361mph in 2003.

Good Times, Bad Service
As I mentioned before, my mother and Helen decided to visit us and, in turn, become our first guests ever and fully justifying the need for a guest bedroom. Unfortunately they bought their plane ticket before we moved so we had to drive down to Georgia to pick them up. Luckily Robyn’s mom picked them up from the airport s we only had to go to Milledgeville.
We spent the night in Milledgeville as we drove down after work and left after lunch the following day, but that was enough time to take them out on the lake, I’m unsure if they enjoyed it or not as they ended up sunburned and looked like they were holding on for dear life… They slept for a little bit on the drive up to Charlotte, so that made that 4 hour journey a little easier as they were still a little jetlagged. Unfortunately dinner that night would prove to be the start of a series of bad consumer service experiences as the waitress at the restaurant was getting order wrong, admittedly it was most likely a combination of Scottish people talking to a Japanese waitress but still…
On Friday they were due to travel by train up to Raleigh, but Helen didn’t bring her photo ID to the train station, so that meant no travel… So instead we had dinner at Mickey and Mooch which was very nice, but our waiter kept us waiting for seemingly minor things, like bread, refills and boxes. On the plus side, we had a ton of left over that would come in handy later on in the week.
On Saturday we drove up to Asheville to see the Biltmore Estate which took up a couple of days as we toured the entire house (as well as taking in the Rooftops tour), the winery (where we picked up more than a few bottles of Biltmore wine), and taking in afternoon tea at the Inn. The hotel we stayed at wasn’t great, it was in a pretty crappy location, which was hard to find, and for dinner on Saturday night, they served me a buffalo chicken sandwich that consisted of raw chicken…
Seriously, raw chicken!
Needless to say, we were pretty pissed about that, our compensation was another bottle of wine as I turned down a replacement sandwich.
Sunday was spent at Biltmore, but not before we literally gorged ourselves during the brunch buffet at the Grove Park Inn, on the way home we went via the outlet stores in Gaffney. Monday we drove them around the Huntersville/Lake Norman area, our bad luck continued as Lowes Foods got our online order mixed up with somone else’s, 4 bad events in the space of 6 days, not too shabby huh? Pretty much the only place we didn’t have bad service was at Biltmore.
Robyn and I had to work the rest of the time, so we left them to their own devices but I hope they had a good time. I know we had a good time being hosts…
