  • Photosynth

Microsoft unveil a preview of Photosynth, a 3D way to view photos taken in the same location. This looks to be very, very cool… Get this working with Flickr and geotagging and you have a virtual 3D Earth.

  • Almost Free Cable

Sometimes I love our little TV, back in Atlanta it was able to get us the local HD channels from Comcast even though we didn’t have the cable box to decrypt the signal. Thanks to Robyn we also got the extended basic package for the basic basic price, always nice. We also got a few channels we shouldn’t have like Discovery Health and NBATV, nothing really special but a bonus none the less.

Now when we fired it up in our new home and set it up to find the Time Warner channels, all we got extra was the local FOX and CBS in HD, which meant Super Bowl and March Madness in HD, and Discovery HD Theater. Kinda sucky really… But a bonus still. Last night we were watching Mythbusters on TiVo when Robyn went off to check on the dinner that was cooking, I flicked through FOX and CBS HD when on screen was ESPN2 HD, nice… Next up was HDNet, now we’re onto something good.

Soon we were flicking through every channel we get to list what new ones we’ve scored on top of our extended basic package, the list was astounding. HBO, Showtime (in HD too), Starz, Encore, Fox Soccer Channel (score!), Science Channel, BBC America, Discovery Health (again), a whole bunch of movie channels and lots more I can’t even remember, almost a complete total package… We’ve scored big time. Now we need to remember the channel numbers, instead of being 114, 203, 732 or whatever, it’s like 77.1, 89.2 which really makes it hard to find what you want.

So now I can watch The Sopranos (no more Sunday night downloading), all the soccer I want, Penn & Teller’s Bullshit (Robyn likes that, we watched it last night), sweet. Another downside is we can’t TiVo it, can’t have everything…

  • Britain’s Best and Worst Places to Bring Up Children

Britain’s Best and Worst Places to Bring Up Children. Apparently, the best place to bring up children is in my brothers house, how bizarre!

  • No One Belongs Here More Than You

No one belongs here more than you. Miranda July does a real old skool website to promote her book of the same name, that being hand written with a dry erase marker on appliance surfaces. Very nice indeed.

  • Meanwhile, in North Mecklenburg…

A 16-year-old student took his own life Wednesday afternoon, just an hour after he approached classmates armed with a gun on campus at North Mecklenburg High School in Huntersville. The events put four schools temporarily on lockdown and had the area police and campus officers on high alert. Just after the lockdown ended, officers tracked the student to a gas station. When police approached the teenager, he made his weapon visible, but instead of putting it down, he turned it on himself.

  • The Economy Takes a Pounding

Today the pound broke through the $2 barrier for the first time in 15 years…

Pound to Dollar Rate - April 17th 2007

Of course, this is great for UK tourists over here, they’re making out like bandits, bad for us going the other way though as the UK is ridiculously overpriced on items as it is… Hopefully things will be a bit more “normal” when we go back over there next year, otherwise we’re going to be properly screwed over.

  • Deadly Shooting at Virginia Tech

At least 20 people have been killed and more injured after a gunman went on the rampage at the campus of Virginia Tech. Police say there were two separate shooting incidents, one at West Ambler Johnston Hall, a student dormitory, and Norris Hall, an engineering building. The incidents were about two hours apart. Police also said that the gunman at Norris Hall is dead.

  • Rocky Balboa

My infamous movie reviews are now turning into DVD reviews (or in this case, and the case of Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait, it’s a download review) as we rarely get to the cinema nowadays, but it’s the thought that counts really.

    Rocky Balboa

Now I love the Rocky movies (even Rocky V, but not passionately), I grew up with them, I’ve seen them all multiple multiple times. I remember going to see Rocky IV in a movie theatre that no longer exists in Bearsden. A few years back AMC ran Rocky through Rocky V in one big serving and I watched them all so it’s only logical I’d love this, right? And as clichéd as this movie is, I do like it, a lot.

Rocky Balboa picks up years after the conclusion of Rocky V, Adrian is dead, Rocky runs a restaurant and his son has grown up and moved on to a life in big business, Paulie is still hanging around but, really, the years haven’t been good on anyone. So up pops an ESPN show about who would win in a make believe fight between Rocky in his prime and the current heavyweight champion, Mason “The Line” Dixon, a computer simulation says Rocky would win by knock out which piques his interest in local, small-time fighting again while also riling up the champ… The only logical way to find out is in the squared circle. So Rocky comes out of retirement with his usual, highly uplifting training regime and steps through the ropes for one last fight.

Now I won’t spoil the end, but if you’ve seen any Rocky film then you’re more than likely to know what’s going to happen. It’s just one of those feel good movies where you know the underdog is going to come good in the end… Very much recommended.

  • 404, Number Not Found…

First it was the drivers license, now the phone number… Piece by piece, we’re changing over from Georgia to North Carolina, all that’s left, really, is the license plates on our cars, and they are due for renewal in the next 2 months.

I’m kinda sad to be giving up my 404 number. Firstly because I’m a nerd and the thought of “404 number not found” makes me giggle ever so slightly. Secondly, it meant I was “ITP,” even though the number was bought in a (then) AT&T Wireless store in Kennesaw, about as far as ITP as you could get. Being 404 it meant I could look down on 770 and especially 678 (which Robyn was), 404 was the equivalent of Atlanta cell phone royalty. OK, not quite…

The worst part is I had only recently memorised it, mainly cause of job searching. Now I have two whole new numbers to remember, luckily our numbers are only 4 digits apart (ending in 9881 and 9885), but 704 will never really be as cool as 404. Can you even remember what a 704 error is? That’s if you’ve ever come across one. Another sad thing is it is still a Cingular branded SIM card, I was hoping for some spanking new at&t branding, just to stick that knife in further after all the pain we went through transferring from the old AT&T Wireless to Cingular. Or is that episode yet to come?

  • Old Guy Radio

I actually already planned this, but Dave gave me a reason

    Bruce Springsteen – Thunder Road

This came on the radio on my way to work this morning, and immediately I was screaming the words at the top of my lungs, the only way it could have been better is if I was driving down the highway in a classic Mustang soft top with the roof down.

If you don’t “feel” this then just go ahead and throw yourself out the nearest window… Seriously!

  • Actual Content

Yes, it’s one of those “I’m so busy, I’ve no time to blog” posts… The last few weeks have transcended from “oh, I’ve just joined a new company and they’ll ease me into the job” to “oh shit! ¼ of the people working here are off, I’ve been dropped into the deep end doing jobs out with my job description.” Fun times…

That’s not stopped me dropping links and grainy camera phone pictures though, or Twittering away neither. It’s now obvious I’m moving away from regular blogging to tumblelogging meta information. So in that sense I’ve started a little blog at tumblr that’s running off feeds from here, Flickr and Twitter. Ideally I’d love to get something like that running here, or on another domain I have, be it .com or the .org, but Dreamhost have disabled “allow_url_fopen” in PHP so I’d have to cURL it, and I can’t be bothered with that.

Feeds is definitely where it’s at, everything has an xml feed now. I’ve started using the Google Personalized homepage now which is loaded up with various tabs for various things, I can pull in Gmail, traffic, weather, calendars, news, sports, blogs, basically anything I want. Again, I would love to have done this on my own, but it’s nice enough now it’s no longer a plain Google page you get… Yes, I’ve fallen for the themes Google have implemented, I’ve chosen the Teahouse theme and now my day is dictated by that little fox and his daily routine.

Though as the days have gone by, I can’t help but feel that the poor fox is lonely, poor guy, always eating lunch and dinner alone. Google should give him a little friend, they should also incorporate weather into the theme like they did with the Bus Stop theme, that would be very cool.

Anyways, we’re having a little movie night shindig tonight, should be fun, even though I’ve had enough of this week already, I’d rather just go home and wind down, not play host to other people… Gotta lighten up as the afternoon rolls on.

  • Nickelback Double Dip?

Audio demonstration of how two Nickelback songs released two years apart are actually, to a rough approximation, the same song. “You bastards, you’re taking advantage of those tone deaf MTV brainwashed twats who are too thick to notice you’re releasing song that are EXACTLY THE SAME as ones your recorded earlier.” [via]
