  • Hero For Our Time

As thousands of Glaswegians queued, moaned and sneakily sipped Buckfast on a rainy Saturday afternoon, one man stood vigilant outside the airport terminal. Baggage supervisor, hero, smoker. John Smeaton. Little did he know, as he happily dragged on his fag, that two crazed al-Qaeda operatives were preparing to meet their maker. But they didn’t meet their maker. Instead they met BAA’s answer to Jack Bauer. As the Jeep’s engine revved and the passenger started chucking the petrol containers out the windows like he was Santa in Shettleston, one man stepped in to help The Law take control. Those hapless al-Qaeda boys were to find out that Glasgow has no respect for international terrorism.

  • Sicko

This evening Robyn and I took in the new Michael Moore documentary, Sicko, and as it’s a Michael Moore documentary, you know what your getting…

    Sicko

As I said, this is your typical Michael Moore documentary, highly controversial and padding over some elements… But hey, I come from the UK where healthcare is free (though there are private healthcare options) and knowing some of the medical bills I’ve racked up over the last 2 years I can kind of see his point. Put it this way, even though we’re on a nice Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, if I ever need any kind of major-ish surgery, I’ll be on a plane to the UK quicker than you would believe.

Sure there are waiting lists in the UK and all the downsides of national health, but I’d much rather take that wait than worry about how much it’s going to cost. I mean, my root canal cost over $1,000 (thankfully it was covered up to 80%), how much would have my appendectomy cost? Or any of the multiple eye operations I’ve had since as far back as I can remember? Or my 3 day stay in hospital for an unknown blackout? Or even surgery to remove hemorrhoids? That’s not even counting doctor visits or referrals to specialists and none of those cost me or my family a single penny…

Anyways, back onto topic after that little aside, this is a very good movie. Everyone should watch it, even if you don’t agree with anything he’s saying and you may think Moore is a bit of a dick, but I’d much rather have a dick standing up, getting things like this noticed than no one at all.

  • Car Bomb at Glasgow Airport

A car on fire has been driven at the main terminal building at Glasgow Airport.

    Glasgow Airport Fire

Eyewitnesses have described a Jeep Cherokee being driven at speed towards the building with flames coming out from underneath. They have also described seeing two Asian men, one of whom was on fire, who had been in the car. Strathclyde Police said two people had been arrested and detained in connection with the incident.

Scary shit, scary scary shit. This is the first report of “terrorism” on Scottish soil in recent times (as far as I can remember).

  • Seperated at Birth?

Two Rangers players, 10 years apart, you decide…

    Peter Van Vossen

    DaMarcus Beasley

    It’s uncanny!

  • Spice Girls to Reunite

The Spice Girls have confirmed they will reform for a world tour to begin in December. The announcement was made at a press conference with all five members at London’s O2 arena. The full line-up has not performed on stage since Ginger Spice Geri Halliwell quit in May 1998. Hmmm “Spice” “Girls” I recognise those words, but they don’t make sense…

  • DaMarcus Beasley Signs for Rangers

Rangers have completed the signing of DaMarcus Beasley form PSV Eindhoven, subject to a work permit being granted. $100 for the first person to get a Rangers jersey with Run DMP on the back… Run DMP you ask? I’m sure my brother will chime in on this subject.

  • Crazy Day

What a strange day it’s been, ever since I found out about Chris Benoit’s death round about this time yesterday. Now I’ll admit I was a pretty big wrestling fan back in the day, like in the late 80’s/early 90’s period of Hulk Hogan and Ultimate Warrior, who wasn’t really? As I grew older wrestling became more and more marginalised by other, way more important things in life until 1999 when flicking through channels on Sky, I came across the Royal Rumble late one Sunday night. Meh I though, nothing else on at 1am, why not?

See back in those days I was an extreme nightowl, I’d stay up till all hours of the morning just fucking around doing nothing. But anyways, 1999 Royal Rumble, one match in particular got me hooked again, The Rock beating 50 shades of blue out of Mick Foley. Seriously, watch it, you’ll be amazed… Anyways, 1999 through 2003 was a pretty good wrestling period, lots of memorable matches, I personally attended many live shows from 2002 through 2006 and, hey, it entertained me. And during this period, one of my favourite wrestlers was Chris Benoit, so for the last day or so I’ve been building up to a tribute to him as he died yesterday.

Alas not to be as it appears he killed his wife and son over the weekend before taking his own life in a pretty cowardly way out. How fucked up is that? It was just last week he was here in Charlotte filming an episode of ECW at Bobcats Arena, then he went back to Atlanta and offed his family then himself! So everything has turned from sadness to absolute astonishment, once things became clearer the reactions of RIP turned to RIH and now it seems that the WWF (screw this WWE bull) are basically trying to brush the 7 years Benoit spent with them under the rug, going as far as to removing his name from the main event of the WrestleMania XX DVD (the main event he won no less) in their online store… Just last night they broadcast a poignant 3 hour tribute to him, of course this was before anyone knew he was a cold blooded murderer, now they’ll be fighting back the negative press from this.

It’s just kinda messed up. I’m sure somewhere, some kid is wondering why his hero just went and killed his family for no apparent reason. I guess we’ll never know…

  • Chris Benoit 1967 – 2007

WWE professional wrestler Chris Benoit his wife Nancy and their 7-year-old son were found dead in their home near White Water Country Club in Fayetteville, GA. on Monday afternoon. Lieutenant Tommy Pope of the Fayette County Sheriff’s Department said results of autopsies on Benoit, his wife Nancy, and 7-year-old son Daniel were expected Tuesday. Police are investigating the deaths as a homicide. Damn, just damn… Back when I got back into wrestling in 1999/2000, Benoit quickly became one of my favourites. Shocking to say the least…

  • New Look Hawks

The Atlanta Hawks unveil a new look… I’m undecided it they look more like the Charlotte Bobcats or maybe the New Jersey Nets now. In my opinion they should have brought back the Dominique era threads.

  • Thierry Henry to Barcelona

Arsenal have confirmed they have reached an agreement with Barcelona for the transfer of striker Thierry Henry. The deal, thought to be worth about £16m, is subject to the Frenchman passing a medical. Arsenal must be sick, it was only a year ago they were turning down £50m bids for Henry.

  • iPhone Guided Tour

A 20 minute guided tour of the upcoming iPhone. A week to go and this hype is fast approaching critical mass… That said, it does look sweet.

  • Blogging Via the Wii

I’m testing out the Wii internet channel simply for the purposes of blogging and how long this will take… Yes, I’m also timing myself.

It’s actually a bit of a pain with the onscreen keyboard, and the phone style layout lacks predictive text, which really sucks… I guess I also miss the tactile feel of a real keyboard, which doesn’t bode well for the upcoming iPhone and it’s touchscreen technology. How long till Nintendo release a little keyboard add-on?

My quick conclusion is it’s not made for this… Well, not yet anyway. But it’s great for quick browsing, case in point was Robyn saying how back in the day if she was watching TV and wanted to find out more information about anything she would have to walk into her room, dial up the internet and go to IMDB or whatever, now we can pause TV on TiVo, pick up the Wii remote, power it up which makes it take over the TV signal thanks to our little 4-way component box, open the internet channel and go to IMDB or Wikipedia, turn it off, the TV reverts back to TiVo and we pick up where we left off.

Makes life is a bit too easy huh?

Anyways, I’ve probably given myself horrific carpal tunnel by holding this Wii remote for nearly 20 minutes now, best give up before I ramble on too much.
