  • Lollapalooza No More…

It looks like Lollapalooza 2004 has bit the dust just 3 weeks before the touring festival got underway…

    LOLLAPALOOZA, 2004 CANCELS ALL DATES

You can imagine the dismay I share at this moment with the artists and musicians who were looking forward to the tour. Lollapalooza could no longer see fit to continue this year. Our plight is a true indication of the general health of the touring industry and it is across musical genres. Unexhausted is our virtue. We are taking Lollapalooza back and plan on rebuilding and recreating the festival in surroundings more conducive to the cultural experience we’ve become known for.

Shame, it looked like a nice line up over the two days too. I was thinking of going to the shows at Turner Field in August aswell as I’d like to see Modest Mouse, Gomez, Flaming Lips, Polyphonic Spree, Black Rebel Motorcycle Club and Sonic Youth to name a few. And a two day pass for $50 was a downright steal in terms of todays concert prices.

  • What I Really Want…

I’ve now got everything moved over to the WordPress system and played about with a few things, and broke a few things along the way, but there is stuff I’d really like to implement, but as yet have no idea how…

Firstly, I’d like a linklog of sorts, because how many posts are wasted with inane news items that could easily be placed in a little sidebar bit (examples: pink socks & eclecticism) or even inbetween main posts (examples: kottke & Photo Matt)… You know, stuff along the lines of Ben Affleck winning the California State Poker Championships (he was da bomb in Phantoms, yo!)

Secondly, I want to get the permanant links sorted out, instead of using www.gregorsmith.com/blog/index.php?p=273, this would be www.gregorsmith.com/blog/archives/2004/05/21/what-i-really-want/, or something along those lines.

I now have one of my little things sorted, that being multi category’s, so I can have pictorials and excursions combined (in some cases), as well as other items that can be put together… I just need to go through and edit the posts I want to edit.

I hope to acheive all this and more in the not to distant future.

  • After All the Heartache…

I finally… Finally got WordPress installed and working AND got my b2 blog posts converted over with only 5 hissy fits, 3 fresh installations and 7 posts in the wordpress support forum, basically saying “isn’t this supposed to be easy???”

But dammit I succeeded… And for anyone wanting to do the same, here is a few easy steps for you to get up and running…

    1. BACK UP YOUR DATABASE!!!!!! This simply cannot be stressed enough
    2. Download the latest WordPress release (although I didn’t, but more on that later)
    3. change your wp-config-sample so the field prefix says “b2” instead of “wp_”
    4. Upload everything to your ROOT directory (again, more on this later)
    5. Run the import b2 file, go through each step
    6. Login under your old b2 login

The next few steps are mandatory, if not needed skip to step 11

    7. Change settings if you have your blog in another directory, like mine is “journal”
    8. HOLY SHIT, nothing works…
    9. Don’t sweat it kid, delete the WordPress install from the root and reinstall in your blog folder
    10. Login again
    11. Blog away!

Rough I know but hey, it works…

To make things even more complex, I installed an older version of WordPress and upgraded to the newest one.

So there you have it, after a few aborted attempts I finally come good and have a weblog system thats a bit more up-to-date than the stagnant b2 development

Now just to convert my old template over, that may take a day or so…

  • Well… That Went Well

I tried an upgrade to WordPress and it actually installed properly, but the b2 to WP import script didn’t work so well, so I’m back here… For the time being…

  • TrackBack Issues

Now, more than ever, I’m having issues with TrackBacks… I rarely use them but when I do they hardly work, maybe like 2 or 3 times out of ten, if I’m lucky.

Maybe an upgrade is needed… But we know Movable Type wont work. Maybe WordPress will, I’ll try this weekend.

  • Kevin Smith Says: “Declare Yourself!”

(via Michael Hanscom and News Askew)

Kevin Smith wheels out View Askew veterans to urge people to vote, yes including Jay & Silent Bob… As he says:

So all this week, I’ve been working on Public Service Announcements (aka commercials) for this organization called Declare Yourself. It’s a non-partisan group founded by Norman Lear (the man who responsible for “All in the Family”, “Maude”, “Good Times”, “The Jeffersons” and so many other legendary tv shows) that, like “Rock the Vote” encourages people to register and be heard. Declare Yourself and Comedy Central have teamed up to produce a series of ads that are so simple even I could direct them. So that’s what I did.

The concept is, essentially, “In the time it’s taken you to watch this, you could’ve been online, finding out how to register to vote.” Those helping us convey this message have been Zach Braff, Ray Romano, Adam Brody, Wanda Sykes, Larry David, Jeff Garlin, and Sarah Silverman. Today, we shoot Ben Affleck, Eliza Dushku, and a pair of stoners who’re coming out of semi-retirement for the cause. Then, I fly to NYC and shoot Amy Poehler, Chris Rock, Chris Walken and David Cross.

They start airing in July. Pretty funny stuff. Keep an eye out for ’em.

  • Splish Splash…

Last Friday afternoon we took a well earned trip to Six Flags Whitewater amidst the 89° Georgia heat and had a great time, even if it was only Phil and me going on the slides… Friday afternoon was the perfect time really, we barely had any queues to wait in, except for the new ride, The Tornado… So we went on pretty much every ride they had to offer, except I backed out of going on The Cliffhanger and The 100 Meter Splash ride was closed.

So what was Erika and Adam doing while me and Phil were splashing about? Taking pictures (see below) and carrying wet clothes around, though Adam did join us on the little river that goes round the park…

    Phil on The Cliffhanger
    The Eye of the Tornado
Phil and I wait in line...
I brick it on The Tornado
    Still mortified...
    Into the eye...
The three of us on the lazy river
    Peace out... Bitches!
    Adam
    Adam and Me
Phil and Me race on the Dragons Tail
    And the pain afterwards
    Splash landing
    And I flipped it!
    Drenched
    Tubing...

Have we turned into gerbils ladies and gentlemen?

  • I’m Quite the Joke… Apparently…

So, I mentioned that I broke up with Robyn a few weeks ago… Well, we got back together last Monday and despite a few up’s and down’s, things are going pretty good. Kinda…

Now, understand that I’ve been putting this off for the last week, because I wanted it to sink in and see how I felt further on down the road, but events occured last weekend while I was away livin’ it up at the lake.

Not good events, pretty bad events, pretty shitty events.

I wish I could refer to Robyn’s “journal” entry about it but it’s been taken down. So I’ll have to relay events as best as I can from the story being told to me…

Basically last Saturday was Robyn’s birthday, and as I was away at the lake and not here to celebrate it with her (added to the fact we had broken up) she decided to seek comfort from elsewhere, so she went out with her ex-ex-boyfriend, a guy called Rob (Rob & Robyn, how cute, no?) and to cut a long story short, sex was involved…

She told me this on Monday outside Fado’s in Buckhead, rather tearily might I add, and to be blunt, I was pretty stunned but tried to play it cool, as opposed to losing my cool in a public place… Though, long time readers will know about my Human Doormat™ properties, but I accepted it as we had broken up, basically no harm no foul in my book, but took small satisfaction from Robyn’s descriptions of Rob’s ability (or lack of) in the… Well, you get the idea, maybe she was trying to make me feel better or maybe it was genuine, it’s a moot point overall…

Anyways, Robyn is having a hard time these last few weeks as she quit her job, so with nothing to do and sitting around the house all day, it’s begining to take it’s toll on her and it reached boiling point on Thursday when she tried to get some stuff back from Rob’s, apparently it was a messy situation all round and I tried my best to help her (but I’m pretty useless in some situations).

Anyhoo, I’m loathed to do this as I don’t perticularly want to give Rob the satisfaction of affecting me, but he decided it was ok to write about me on his website…

Robyn goes further downhill with each succession of male suitors and the newest guy takes the cake. Greg or Gregor or whatever the hell his name is is quite the joke. A mid to late 20 something with no college degree, no job to speak of, seemingly ambitionless and living here illegally to boot!

I’ve had plenty of crap written about me on multiple website (some of which is even factually true!) but having some 30-year-old jerk-off talk smack about me when he doesn’t even know me takes the cake. Even though this technically makes me no better thean him, it certainly made me feel better… Besides, he’s one to talk as he’s dating an 18-year-old high school drop-out, who was working at the Arby’s drive-thru when he met her on the chat lines…

    Pot, Kettle… Black.

  • AirTunes

I guess I’ve been living under a rock recently, cause when I opened iTunes tonight, it asked if I wanted to update from 4.5 to 4.6. Why not I thought, even though the 4.5 update was just over a month ago…

So I investigate what the changes are and I come across this…

    Apple AirPort Express

For the uninitiated (like myself apparently), it’s the all new Apple AirPort Express base station… Basically a gadget you plug into the wall and you can share a single broadband Internet connection and USB printer without inconvenient and obtrusive cables, create an instant wireless network on the go… Or stream your iTunes library over your home stereo in different rooms.

    Yes, you read that right

AirTunesAirPort Express with AirTunes redefines the way you listen to your music at home. It gives you the freedom to play your iTunes music through your stereo or powered speakers in virtually in any room of your house – wirelessly. It lets you enjoy the tremendous flexibility of iTunes without being bound to your Mac or PC, opening up a whole new world of musical enjoyment.

You’ve put together an extensive digital music collection in iTunes, arranged it into clever playlists to suit your every mood. Now you want to enjoy it in your living room on your home stereo, not just in the den, where your computer sits. Enter AirPort Express with AirTunes.

AirPort Express works with iTunes to make listening to your iTunes music library through your home stereo or powered speakers not only a possibility but a snap. Whether your stereo or powered speakers are located in your living room, bedroom or basement, just plug it or them into the audio port on the AirPort Express Base Station using an audio cable. iTunes automatically detects the connection. When you open iTunes on your AirPort-equipped Mac or Wi-Fi-compliant PC, you’ll see a popup list at the bottom right of the iTunes window showing your remote speakers. Select it, click play and your stereo becomes the world’s greatest digital jukebox.

If I had a stereo, I would probably get this despite the $130 price tag, but alas… I need to get other things, like a TV for starters.

  • Camping

Last time out I briefly mentioned:

Now we’re (Phil, Erika, Adam and me) taking the weekend off to go camping by Lake Lanier, we have the supplies in, the fishing rods, the fishing licenses are valid to go with it… Should be fun

    And what fun it was…

We’ve been to Lake Lanier before on a day out, and decided that we should go camping once we had the chance, so, as previously mentioned, we got the stuff together and on Friday, we loaded the old Explorer up to the gils with more than enough equipment, 4 people and 3 dogs.

We were booked into the Sawnee camping ground in, what we later found out, was one of the best sites in the ground… We had a huge tent area for our huge 4 room tent, a little BBQ grill, a firepit and a little beachy area where we could go out and swim from… And we did a lot of swimming, and fishing, and kayaking… Mostly a lot of swimming… So we unpack, put up the tent and inflate the airbeds, because we believe in roughing it, and test the water.

After swimming and fishing for a bit we stop to dry off and have supper, later we begin one of the many games of Uno as the moon begins to rise, and it was a gorgeous red moon that showed up about 11pm

    Red Moon Rising

So after Phil goes to bed, Erika, Adam and myself sat watching the world go peacefully by before turning in too…

We’re all up early the next morning, and we spent the whole day in the water, and we all ended up various shades of red, we only took breaks for food, games of uno, chess and naps.

Sunday comes and we’re all in various levels of pain with sunburn, Adam is blistering and popping ibuprofen like m&m’s, so we get up late, have one last dip in the water and slowly pack everything away back into the truck before checking out at 3, but not before we scouted out the campsite and agreed we had the best spot in the place…

The BBQ Erikas ghostly figure mans the BBQ Adam and Phil play chess, Simpsons Chess at that... Moon rises Sunrise The lake at sunrise
Two lone fishermen at dawn Adam fishing as the sunrises Me, looking a bit sunburnt Me fishing in the lake Phil and Adam swimming Lake Lanier

    The obligatory you-know-what.

  • Where is My Mind?

Hmmm, things are a bit sparse around here nowadays, so much so that I’ve decided to display the last 14 days of posts as opposed to the usual week, truth is I’ve been pretty busy since last Friday and this place has been the last thing on my mind…

Well, as previously mentioned, Monday was my birthday, so Robyn and I went to her parents cabin on the shores of Lake Sinclair to celebrate both our birthdays as her birthday is this Saturday coming… So her family was down there and we had a lot of fun lounging about or going out in the boat or swimming off the end of their dock, plus I learned a few things I didn’t know about NASCAR

On Monday Phil, Erika, Adam and me had a packed day that included, but not limited to, bowling, moose kissing and playing about in the swimming pool (which ended in me getting stripped butt nekkid), a fun day for the most part… I say the most part because Robyn and I also broke up…

Anyways, a few choice pictures from my birthday.

My bowling form... Some balls Drinking at Bugaboo Creek KISS THE MOOSE!!! My reaction to the embarrassment Me and Adam in the pool
Chilling in the water More fun in the pool A drowned rat The shorts are off Is he?... Yep... Naked...

And for the last few days I’ve buried myself in work… Except Wednesday night, when I met up with Robyn to talk about stuff… We went to Bahama Breeze where I saw former WCW/WWF wrestler, Buff Bagwell. Kind of surreal really, but a nice guy to talk to if only for a short while.

Now we’re (Phil, Erika, Adam and me) taking the weekend off to go camping by Lake Lanier, we have the supplies in, the fishing rods, the fishing licenses are valid to go with it… Should be fun, sorry I have to disappear again though.

  • Happy Birthday Colin Farrell

You know that actor who was seemingly everywhere last year? Well he’s 28 today… So happy birthday to him, and happy birthday to Lea Thompson (43), Brooke Shields (39), DMC of Run DMC (40), Tom Berenger (54), Clint Eastwood (74) and Prince Rainer of Monaco (81) also…

Oh, and happy birthday to me too…
