Sicko

This evening Robyn and I took in the new Michael Moore documentary, Sicko, and as it’s a Michael Moore documentary, you know what your getting…

Sicko

As I said, this is your typical Michael Moore documentary, highly controversial and padding over some elements… But hey, I come from the UK where healthcare is free (though there are private healthcare options) and knowing some of the medical bills I’ve racked up over the last 2 years I can kind of see his point. Put it this way, even though we’re on a nice Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, if I ever need any kind of major-ish surgery, I’ll be on a plane to the UK quicker than you would believe.

Sure there are waiting lists in the UK and all the downsides of national health, but I’d much rather take that wait than worry about how much it’s going to cost. I mean, my root canal cost over $1,000 (thankfully it was covered up to 80%), how much would have my appendectomy cost? Or any of the multiple eye operations I’ve had since as far back as I can remember? Or my 3 day stay in hospital for an unknown blackout? Or even surgery to remove hemorrhoids? That’s not even counting doctor visits or referrals to specialists and none of those cost me or my family a single penny…

Anyways, back onto topic after that little aside, this is a very good movie. Everyone should watch it, even if you don’t agree with anything he’s saying and you may think Moore is a bit of a dick, but I’d much rather have a dick standing up, getting things like this noticed than no one at all.

My 24 hour stay in hospital last year cost well over $2,000 – and since I didn’t have medical insurance, it had to be covered by real monies.

Some things I’m glad about being back in the UK for…
