He was not trying to get himself killed. He was trying to get some nice, easy footage for a children’s show his daughter is hosting. Sting rays are not usually dangerous. People swim with them all the time, and they usually do no more than cause a little pain if they sting someone.
He never tried to get himself killed. His motivation was conservation and education. He did it in a fairly entertaining way, but he wasn’t about doing dangerous things. What he did was generally a lot less dangerous than it appeared for someone like him who knew what he was doing and knew what not to do.
