Finally I got to see Superman Returns, in IMAX 3D no less, and suffice to say, it was all that and then some… But before I begin, a little history lesson.
Following on from Superman II, Astronomers find what they believe to be Krypton, so Superman goes in search of this planet. 5 years later he comes crashing back to Earth, an Earth that no longer needs him apparently, but old nemesis Lex Luthor is out of jail and has already hatched a plot involving Supermans Fortress of Solitude… Meanwhile. like the rest of the Earth, Lois Lane has moved on with her life with a fiancee and son, but her son is showing some familiar signs.
I’m not going to mention it directly, but:
T.S. Quint: But they’re engaged.
Brodie: Doesn’t matter, can’t happen.
T.S. Quint: Why not? It’s bound to come up.
Brodie: It’s impossible, Lois could never have Superman’s baby. Do you think her fallopian tubes could handle the sperm? I guarantee you he blows a load like a shotgun right through her back. What about her womb? Do you think it’s strong enough to carry her child?
T.S. Quint: Sure, why not?
Brodie: He’s an alien, for Christ sake. His Kyrptonian biological makeup is enhanced by earth’s yellow sun. If Lois gets a tan the kid could kick right through her stomach. Only someone like Wonder Woman has a strong enough uterus to carry his kid. The only way he could bang regular chicks is with a kryptonite condom. That would kill him.
Of course, if timelines follow absolute, Lois and Clark could have concievably cocieved while Superman was in human form following his over-exposure to artificial red sunlight during Superman II, nice little plothole huh?
I really liked this, and the 3D bits were worth the hike in ticket price alone. From the opening credits which was a nice homage to the original 1978 movie ones to an appearance by Marlon Brando from beyond the grave, it was perfect in every way. Brandan Routh is a very believeable Superman, Kevin Spacey is damn near perfect as Lex Luthor, a nice preogression from Gene Hackman’s Luthor, Kate Bosworth is so-so as Lois, a bit on the young side but OK… The most underrated performace was probably by Parker Posey as Kitty (this movie Miss Teschmacher for all extents and purposes).
Anyways, go see it if you haven’t already, and if you have, go see it in IMAX 3D, you’ll love it!

I LOVED this movie. I can’t wait for it on DVD, so I can see it again. I thought they did an amazing job! Also, nice little homage to Mallrats there… LOL!
Kate Bosworth is FAR too young to be Lois – if Supes has been gone for 5 years, then she’d have been illegal before he left.
I think Brandon’s not too bad looking for the role, but he’s a lot younger than Reeve, although he has the perfect “look” for the Man Of Steel.
Well, no, Kate Bosworth would have been 18, but this is the magic of the cinema where actors can play characters younger or older than they really are – suspend some disbelief already
:)
Oh, and Brandon Routh is 27, Chris Reeve was 26 when they made Superman!
I thought it was very disapointing.
Well, you would wouldn’t you…
If she was 18 when he left, that would have made her 16 or 17 when they first started working together, and then “got together”.
Reeve was 26 when he made Superman, but 28 for Superman 2, which is “5 years before Superman Returns”, so he should be 33, not 27 – although Supes is meant to be “long lived”, he shouldn’t get “younger”, should he? ;)
Margot Kidder was supposed to be 18??? WTF?!?!
