One of the joys (and believe me there aren’t as many as you would believe) of being, well let’s just say, in a state of flux between employers, is the ability to just go and do things at a moments notice. Like today for instance, I had nothing to do so I went to see Mission: Impossible III. I knew Robyn wouldn’t want to see this as she has no love for Tom Cruise, so it was a guilt free excursion…
Now, first things first, this follows the same formula as the previous Mission: Impossibles.
- Ethan is sent on an easy mission
- Easy mission is partially successful
- Ethan uncovers the real bad guy
- Bad guy uncovers Ethan
- Bad guy kidnaps Ethans love interest
- Ethan makes a trade with bad guy involving some disasterous secret weapon for his girl
- Trade goes south, Ethan gets his ass kicked by bad guy and just when the situation is at it’s most grim, he triumphs, saves the girl, kills the bad guy and makes sure secret deadly weapon is still safe
- America, Fuck Yeah!
That’s it, sorry if I spoiled it, but if you’ve seen M:I or M:I-2 you knew it was coming. That said, it was a pretty enjoyable action movie, the usual mix of action sequences, insane stunts and plot twists to keep just about everyone happy. I have to say, it was strange seeing Philip Seymour Hoffman as the bad guy, cause the main thing running through my head was “holy shit! Truman Capote is kicking Tom Cruise’s ASS!!!”
Another good thing about it is, it rings in the Summer blockbuster period, bring on Superman Returns, X-Men 3, Pirates of the Carribean and, of course, the much anticipated Snakes on a Plane.

Saw it today (yes, on my own, which isn’t a problem unless people want it to be).
I have to say that I was whelmed – not under whelmed, not over whelmed, just plain whelmed.
It’s a good “turn off the brain” action movie, a few more twists and turns than normal, but it keeps on going, has a few quiet spots, but overall a fun little movie.
I can’t say it was a brilliant film or a horrible film, just a fun film.
Would I recommend it? Only if you’ve got a few hours to waste.
No problem with that, I’ve seen a great number of movies on my own, I saw this on my own too…
Some people seem to think that a guy shouldn’t go to the cinema on his own – some strange ideas which I just don’t understand.
Depends on what kind of cinema, and if you’re wearing a stained raincoat or not…
