Villarreal 1 – 1 Rangers

After the enthralling 2-2 draw in Glasgow two weeks ago, Rangers had to win in Spain in order to progress to the quarter finals of the Champions League, but after a fighting battle they could only walk away with another draw to go out on the shitty away goals rule.

Well, that’s the season pretty much over… Rangers are 21 points behind Celtic in the Scottish Premier League with 10 games to go (a possible 30 points), they are out of both domestic cup competitions and now out of the Champions League. It was a brave effort, further than any Scottish team has been before since the Champions League’s inception, and I fully expected them to capitulate after a disasterous run of results before the first leg.

So Alex McLeish bows out at the end of this season, his last season might look like a disaster on paper, but his overall record pretty much speaks for its self. 2 league titles, 5 domestic cups and qualification for the last 16 of the Champions League, all in the space of 4 years.

So what should Rangers do now? Start rebuilding for next season.. get some of the cupcoming younger players into the squad. Not care too much about losing games.

Of course that won’t happen but hey, it’s worth a shot.

Ideally they should try and win as many games as possible to secure a Champions League place next season… But right now it’s damage control on a sinking ship.

unlucky mate; as much as I like to see the Huns get humped, getting put out at that stage on away goals is a shame. Eck’s going out on a great record, but as usual, the unwritten rules of Scottish football mandate that the guy gets ripped apart. I wonder how long til the same thing happens to Le Guen regardless of his performance?
