Driving at 55 on I-285. Some crazy kids decide to go by the speed limit on I-285… For those who don’t know, I-285 is the perimeter that circles Atlanta, and in Atlanta the speed limit posted is merely a suggestion, we just usually drive at speeds according to what interstate we’re currently on… 75, 85… 285. Interesting.
I definitely like the idea, but I think their execution was lacking. They apparently chose to “pretend they were on the cell phone”?? They should have had signs, in their windows, on the rear and sides of the cars, saying they were driving the speed limit. Point out exactly what they were doing, to make it clear why the speed limit is ridiculous. They clearly had a point to make — but by hiding this, I’m really not sure what they expected to accomplish. Other than to make a slightly amusing video for their friends.
I can understand how, not cluing in the other cars, it might make for a more interesting video — in theory — but it really didn’t. They talked about other cars flipping them off, or clipping mirrors, but then didn’t catch any of that on film. And I honestly think, even with the signs, most people would either ignore them or not understand the point, and still be mightily pissed, flip them off, and cut around them. Which, I think, would just help sell the message all the more.
As a proof of concept, it’s okay. But to really make a point, they need to be back out there, doing this every week, with signs. I don’t know how long they were out there for, either, but they need to go at least one entire lap around the perimeter. Get news coverage. Piss off as many motorists as possible, so those motorists will then call their representatives. Pissing them off, without telling them why, without giving them a reason to complain to their reps, really doesn’t accomplish much.
they weren’t really making a video for their friends, they were making one for a video competition
