One Reason Why Hypochondriacs Shouldn’t Use the Web For Self-Diagnosis

I’ve recently developed a bit of an itch, can’t stop scratching it… It’s a complete pain, scratching all the time, no relief…

So I go to WebMD and after a little a little searching it throws up Chickenpox

Sypmtoms include:

  • An itchy rash of red spots and blisters – check

Great… I try to think if I’ve had Chickenpox before, I dunno… Don’t think so, damn… So here I am reading about how “Chickenpox in teenagers, adults, and people with immune system problems usually is more severe and more likely to cause complications. Adults who become infected with chickenpox are at increased risk for developing a specific type of pneumonia (varicella pneumonia). About 20 to 30 adults out of every 10,000 (0.2% to 0.3%) who develop varicella require hospitalization.”

“I hope I don’t have Chickenpox,” I think, cause that would kinda suck… I quickly ask Phil, Erika and Adam if they’ve had Chickenpox before, and they all have had, so in the worst case scenario they would be “safe.” Of course I’m told I most likey don’t have Chickenpox, so what else could it be? Heat rash?

What Is Heat Rash?

Heat rash — also called prickly heat or miliaria — is a common condition in which areas of the skin itch intensely and often feel prickly, or sting, due to overheating. Heat rash looks like tiny bumps surrounded by a zone of red skin.

Woah, back up there… Miliaria??? My brain reads that and goes “Malaria????”, it took a few reads for me to realise that it was Miliaria, but Jesus… They should understand hypochondriacs like me will read this and think they have a death sentence looming over them.

As for the itch? I’ll give it a few days and see if it clears up, pesky hot and humid Georgia summer days…
